@WxmanFranz Might be my favorite snowstorm, it was raining all day and looked like a bust before these monster bands pivoted in. I think I saw my heaviest snowfall rates then, too. The end of the last truly great winter there.

Unfortunately I think cirrus and smoky haze will make aurora viewing prospects difficult here in the mid South. Current north-facing view from UAH SWIRLL in North Alabama:

I don't know if we've ever gotten such a good view of a polar low/arctic hurricane on radar before

@NickKrasz_Wx I agree. There was also some structural damage not documented in the survey before this likely peak intensity in the Pine Barrens: issuu.com/pinebarrenstri…. The treefall in the middle of the woods was very extensive (2023 Google Earth image):

I've been doing a little satellite work lately so I decided to dip my toes into the tornado scar analysis world. Perhaps New Jersey's only tornado scar is in my home county from a strong EF1 on 7/29/21. You can still see it on Google Maps. I used a satellite product called NDVI,

@EthanKerr2003 Another tornado from that day and the Mullica Hill tor also have scars that are still fairly visible. I do think that tornado has one of the more impressive scars that I've seen here. Pretty crazy it was just EF1.

...inferred track via vegetation loss to the official survey. There's definitely a more northward motion followed by a sharp right turn, which makes me think this was a failed occlusion of some sort. This also coincides with the worst tree damage (most NDVI loss). So, you can...

@WxTca Is there also some mesovortex action going on in the core of this low?

It was just pointed out to me that this system is actually within range of Alaskan radar! Much like a TC, there is well-defined spiral banding with the strongest winds in a relatively tight RMW. Unlike a TC though, the precipitation here is…snow.

A lot of people (including myself!) tend to scoff at the notion that these Mediterranean storms can be something other than (sub)tropical. However, from time to time, the atmosphere reminds us that classifying convective lows is hard! Take a look at this polar low near Alaska:

Interesting disturbance in the Mediterranean Sea drifting towards Libya's Gulf of Sidra. It doesn't look particularly frontal, and there's some persistent convection near the center, although not particularly deep. It probably isn't too far off from being a subtropical storm.

More scenes from today’s surprise snow event in North Alabama. Probably about 0.5-1” of snow in Huntsville all in an hour!
