Henri Coulette (1927-1988) was a masterful poet, tout court. He was also the poet who taught me how to capture Los Angeles in loving yet ironic, wistful yet clear-sighted verse. It is an honor to bring his poems back into print with Michael Caines, as part of @Carcanet Classics.

I have always been an Iliad person, but reading Pavese’s Leucothea Dialogues has made me softer toward Odysseus again, made the many turnings shift a corner. It’s funny how Homeric commentary still works that way for readers after millennia…
