Pentecostalism is, in some ways, "Methodism 2.0." A modern Methodist movement cannot ignore or reject the remarkable moving of the Holy Spirit over the last 125 years or so. Methodism can and should incorporate the best parts of the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements while avoiding the rigidity, legalism, and excesses sometimes associated with them.

@EvanSus96 @Jonathan_Black_ It’s hard to see how it can allow for it formally as it’s incompatible with the “falling away” doctrine. I know JB argues for some nuance in his Systematic Theology. I think the reality is, there were conflicting views even within the same individuals!

In Britain, the three main Pentecostal Denominations are Apostolic, Aog, & Elim. All three, historically, were pre-millennialist (and most were Pre-trib). Interestingly, only the Apostolic Church refers to a millennial reign in the earth in its tenets.

@RevJohnJames @Jonathan_Black_ I thought ACUK allowed for Calvinism formally? But yes, I think there needs to be a conversation on how young denominations change over time on secondary/tertiary issues. No one in the COG is getting in trouble over feet washing but no one has changed it either.

@Jonathan_Black_ @EvanSus96 That doesn’t answer his question though. 😉 that only states what should be believed and taught. Not what happens if a pastor comes to other convictions. The historical evidence of Calvinists would suggest not all have upheld the tenets.

@TalbotDavis @MethodistView @ShaneRaynor @andymilleriii I agree. I think Wesley was the perfect “evangelical catholic.” I do wish modern Methodism would return to those Anglican roots, though. The Duty of Constant Communion, praying the daily office, etc. Charles, the more conservative Anglican brother, is worth listening to!

@ShaneRaynor Methodism has always walked the fine line between Establishment Anglicanism and Frontier Pentecostalism. It's really the stylistic difference between Wesley & Asbury; between First Methodists everywhere and camp meetings everywhere else. @andymilleriii

The trend in some Methodist churches has been to move away from Methodism’s Anglican roots and shed most of the liturgical elements. That’s not really new… we’ve always had churches on both ends of the continuum. But I believe it’s good to lean into both the liturgical & evangelical parts of our tradition.

@Jonathan_Black_ @RevJohnJames The reason I ask is that in the COG, one of the articles of faith is technically foot washing as an ordinance. I’m not sure many actually believe that, but it’s still there. Where is the wiggle room, especially in younger denoms, to change doctrinally on tertiary issues?

@RevJohnJames @EvanSus96 (It’s a different matter in some other countries; Australia and New Zealand, for example, have removed pre-millennialism from their tenets.)

@ShaneRaynor Shane, I can’t DM you. Just wanted to tell you that Methodistprayer.org quite genuinely changed my life. It introduced me to liturgical prayer as a Pentecostal who knew that John Wesley was one of my theological forefathers. It also saved my prayer life. Thank you!

I’m not convinced most non-Methodists even know there’s difference between the UMC and the GMC, or that both denominations even exist. Methodism overall seems to have a bad reputation thanks to the progressive insanity the UMC allows that has been amplified on social media.

The first Adam toiled and sweated for his bread, only to die and return to dust. The Second Adam freely gives us the True Bread that we might live forever.

@EvanSus96 @shimogarciar @DavidFish7 Yh I have felt that too like something is missing. But to be honest I don't think I'm looking outside pentecostalism anytime soon , I'd look for a pentecostal church no matter how small that fits before I look into other traditions. But I think I like Anglicanism....

Methodism is a movement. It exists both inside and outside of established churches and denominations. Christianity isn't limited to Methodism, and Methodism isn't limited to a denomination or even multiple denominations.

@Duke_Danny_5 @shimogarciar @DavidFish7 Ancient faith, biblical and liturgical worship, Eucharist every Sunday. Worship just doesn’t make sense anymore apart from the Liturgy. It always feels like something is missing. It’s also FILLED with Scripture. J.I. Packer described it was the Bible set to worship.

One should have Wesley’s On Christian Perfection in one hand and Brother Lawrence’s Practicing the Presence of God in the other.

@Duke_Danny_5 @DavidFish7 I just recently stepped away from being on staff at a Pentecostal church, but I do believe our local Anglican congregation is most likely where we’ll wind up for good. We attended Holy Week there and it was fantastic.

@Duke_Danny_5 @DavidFish7 I was raised Pentecostal and find the BCP to be incredibly enriching with plenty of opportunities for extemporaneous prayers both within the daily office and throughout the day.

@Duke_Danny_5 The Book has a particular order and words to pray. It’s primarily either Scripture or scriptural allusions. A huge part of the BCP is just praying the Psalms.
