Josh Sawyer says Fallout: New Vegas was designed to catch Fallout 3 players off guard.
In a recent interview, he explained that Obsidian wanted players to realize right away that New Vegas was a different kind of RPG.
Instead of having enemies scale to your level like in Fallout 3, many areas have a fixed difficulty, so wandering into the wrong place too early can get you killed.
One of the best examples is Quarry Junction, where players can run into Deathclaws almost immediately after leaving the starting area.
Sawyer explained the idea behind it:
"It's to teach the player, 'Hey, this is not actually Fallout 3. Things work a little differently. You're going to get your ass handed to you if you're not careful.'"

@JuiceHead33 It’s kind of funny looking at all the videos/thumbnails that claimed with certainty that Bethesda just lost fallout 😱. I feel like it’s easily understood Bethesda would have creative control over the new fallout by obsidian (and all of fallout as well), just like with new Vegas.

@eurogamer It’s a fact most of the people who worked on new Vegas aren’t there, some of the big names are but majority are gone. It’s funny he brings up kotor when he wasn’t even around then, or when majority of the company was ex BIS employees. Just stick to working IPs that aren’t yours🤷♂️

@TKsMantis I’m cautiously interested, while I think obsidian has the potential to make something great, especially under JSE, I feel like if there’s any studio who could mess this up it’s obsidian. Personally I’d want a very muddy, brown and southern fallout, even more cowboy than new Vegas

I am thrilled at the news of Obsidian working on Fallout. It is the game, the guy, and the company we are wanting
But I really got to wonder if Josh Sawyer/Obsidian wanted to be taken off their other game & made to work on Fallout. Feels like the worst possible circumstances

So there may be multiple reveals on the Obsidian front today, but here’s the first:
Interestingly enough, the QA lead Victoria Turner who had brought the recent workplace lawsuit against Obsidian has been said to have been among the recent layoffs.
If this proves true, what an amazing coincidence. Although, this may prove bad for management – laying her off will likely help her litigation, even if it’s under the umbrella of a mass layoff.

@VMU_Dream @ChrisAvellone Actually that unsurprisingly not true, Bethesda made a ton of money from virtuous’ Oblivon remaster and the TV show, we’re talking hundreds of millions. Obsidian made a fraction of that over the years, honestly I’m positive obsidian is either in the negative or barely profitable.

@Raven_Crank I think the isssue is we have 2 large scale financial failures that a lot of rpg fans don’t like, a small scale game that probably made a small profit, and a smaller scale online game that we know made some profit, but also probably not that much in the grand scheme of things.

@Stealth40k I hope they didn’t get rid of JSE, Tim Cain and John Gonzalez because they could have potentially made a positive impact. Obsidian had a consistent stream of mid games that didn’t sell well or small scale projects that made little profit. Kinda shocked they didn’t just get booted

@moejomma @TKsMantis But I’m not gonna say 4 is “objectively” better than new Vegas, I’m of the mind that it’s mostly just subjective opinions about which kind of entertainment you like more. I just personally like 4 as an RPG more, and 3 as well. (3 is my personal fav)

@moejomma @TKsMantis Well I think it has a better hook, the pre war opening is iconic and anybody can relate to wanting to kill the guy who kidnapped your child and killed your spouse. I also just found the world and DLCs in 4 to be more compelling, as well as most of the companion dialogue.
