@theeducakers I’m glad you enjoyed it 😊I think automaticity in handwriting has to have a weighty leverage, particularly in early stages of learning. The content is only getting more challenging for pupils, so if we can remove the barrier through effective teaching, then that’s a win for me 😊

Really interesting read, Joe. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I don't know if the algorithms have got me as this is the second blog I've read about handwriting today. This really stood out to me and is key: Automaticity in handwriting frees up working memory for spelling, sentence construction and idea generation (Berninger et al., 2015). When handwriting is effortful, it competes with thinking. When it’s fluent, it supports it. Like you say, handwriting is much more than neat books!
