@SamBuntz I'm no Yarvin scholar but I remember watching an interview with him & a young lad from Kenya (maybe Ethiopia, I forget) & he had a lot of off the cuff knowledge on their culture/history & I got no sense at all that he had any racial animosity. What are his racist 'greatest hits'?

One weird thing about Yarvin is that he has the same goals as neoliberal technocrats (efficiency, utility), it's just that he wants to use a CEO-king to get there. (And he's racist.) No appreciation for religion, culture, etc. An impoverished conception of the Good.
Christopher F. Rufo ⚔️@christopherrufo

Curtis Yarvin reveals his softer side, saying that although he despises America's founding myths, he is passionate about youth athletics: "I care about the people. I like the human beings. I like small-town football."

@DPearsonPHL It's all about verisimilitude. Race-swapping on it's own isn't the issue. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I don't really care about the Odyssey casting. Same for the costumes. What jarred for me in the trailer was hearing "dad". Totally takes me out of the world.

Black Athena and Black Helen of Troy work in the same way the Nordic versions of both work. These characters have long been adopted by other cultures, and the specifics of their physical appearance aren't really relevant. I do think that "Black Snape" doesn't work however.
Matthew Zeitlin@MattZeitlin

If you want to maintain a western canon in an increasingly diverse society you’re going to have to give some ground on casting (especially in stuff that was never really “historically accurate” in the first place like Shakespeare and epic poetry)

@RedWavePress Apparently, it’s woke to grow over 20 years as a society? Like obviously it’s not acceptable now, and it was 20 years ago. Lots of things were acceptable 20 years ago that aren’t acceptable now. That’s called Progress.

Bill Maher: “Let’s get r*tarded—let’s get started.” will-i-am: *Laughs* Bill Maher: “I’m not trying to say the word r*tarded. I’m not like reveling in that we can say it again. It’s not that big of a deal. If you don’t want to hear it I’m sorry.” “It’s just shows what a different place we were in 20 years ago.” will-i-am: “If you’re in the studio… and the producer or conductor says ‘okay, on bar 24 we’re going to retard on bar 24.’ That’s a musical term.” Bill Maher: “Good luck explaining that to Greta Thunberg because she’s going to f*cking kill your a$$.”

@AVARY It's all about verisimilitude. Race swaps can sometimes work. Non-historically accurate costumes can sometimes work. But my brain just won't allow me to accept "dad" being used instead of "father" here. It's so jarring.

These are all biopics about historical figures whose racial identity is central to the story. By the same token, you couldn’t cast a black actor to play De Klerk in a Mandela movie.

@brian_twiss @VHSDVDBLURAY4K Is there evidence to suggest that kids 'need' this? I was never taught 'film literacy', were you? What even is 'film literacy'? Does it belong to the same school as 'media literacy', wherein you are dogmatically told there is a morally correct way to view certain films?

@EyeDeeNumbers @VHSDVDBLURAY4K Because learning film literacy helps people to understand and analyze arguably the most culturally significant art form we have

@jrwallace24 @RMBee I don't see what difference it makes. The change is real, correct? I don't need to spend £35 on a 4K I don't want to be able to talk about it. If you like it that's fine. I'm literally not judging. It's just an interesting example of a change that isn't solely aesthetic.

@RMBee @EyeDeeNumbers Here’s the thing… @EyeDeeNumbers did you watch the 4K and notice this or just read JoeBlo because even the author of the article hadn’t watched the 4K he was going off the examples on X! Again do these journalists do their own research?!

@RMBee @jrwallace24 Maybe. But then I would wager most people don't actually pick up on it at all. I never noticed it. I only appreciated it in hindsight.

@jrwallace24 @RMBee It's more subtle than Star Wars, but it's notable as it isn't a purely aesthetic change. In fact it runs counter to the whole point of the film. The dosage was unrealistically high to subliminally convey that Jack's an unreliable narrator. One of the best 'clues', now purged.

@RMBee No. I’m pissed because I watched several reviews and pretty sure they doctored the images and footage to make Fincher look like Lucas. I watched the 4K disc last night and it looked great and like the visual aesthetic of the film for the past 25 years.
