THE GETHSEMANE HOUR The Son Did Not Escape the Hour — Neither Will the Servants There is a moment in Scripture where all escape theology collapses under the weight of Jesus’ own example. It is the moment when the Son of God Himself stands before the hour appointed for Him. “If it were possible, the hour might pass from Him… Abba, Father… take away this cup from Me: nevertheless not what I will, but what Thou wilt.” This is the clearest revelation in the Gospels: Jesus Himself did not escape the hour. He submitted to it. He embraced the Father’s will in it. And then — in the same breath — He turns to His disciples and finds them sleeping. Not once. Not twice. But three times. The Hour Jesus Faced Is the Pattern for the Hour We Will Face Jesus prayed: • “If it were possible…” • “Let this hour pass…” • “Take this cup…” But the Father did not remove the hour. He strengthened the Son to endure it. This is the pattern of the kingdom: • The Son endured the hour. • The servants endure the hour. • The remnant endures the hour. • The Church overcomes in the hour. This is why Jesus says: “The servant is not above his Lord.” Escape theology breaks here. It asks for what Jesus Himself was not granted. The Disciples Slept — The Church Sleeps Jesus returns and finds them sleeping. “Simon, sleepest thou? Couldest thou not watch one hour?” This is not merely historical. It is prophetic. The disciples’ sleep in Gethsemane is the prototype of the Church’s sleep at the end of the age. Paul echoes it: “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.” (1 Thess 5:6) Jesus warned it: “If He comes in the second watch, or in the third watch, and finds them watching — blessed are those servants.” (Luke 12:38) The danger of the last days is not merely deception. It is sleep — spiritual dullness, false peace, escapist expectation. The disciples slept in the hour of Jesus’ testing. The Church sleeps in the hour of the world’s testing. “Watch and Pray” — The Command That Refutes Escape Jesus gives the command: “Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.” He does not say: • “Pray that you may escape the hour.” • “Pray that you may be removed from the earth.” • “Pray that you may avoid suffering.” He says: “Pray that you may not fall in the hour.” This is the same command as: • “Watch… that you may be accounted worthy.” • “Hold fast what you have.” • “Be sober… the day shall not overtake you.” The command is not escape. The command is endurance. “The Spirit Is Ready, but the Flesh Is Weak” — The Reason Escape Theology Exists Jesus diagnoses the disciples: “The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.” Escape theology is built on this weakness. It is the doctrine of the flesh: • It avoids suffering. • It rejects endurance. • It fears the hour. • It seeks exemption. • It prefers sleep to watchfulness. The spirit is willing to endure. The flesh is not. Escape theology is the theology of the flesh. The Watches of the Night — The Timing of His Coming Jesus says: “If He shall come in the second watch, or in the third watch, and find them watching — blessed are those servants.” He intentionally skips the first watch — the watch of comfort, normalcy, and ease. He places His coming in: • the second watch — deep night • the third watch — approaching dawn These are the watches of: • pressure • testing • endurance • tribulation • vigilance This is the same pattern as: • Revelation 3:10 — kept in the hour • Luke 21:36 — worthy to stand • Matthew 24 — endure to the end The blessing is not for those who escape the night. The blessing is for those who stay awake in the night. Jesus Himself did not escape the hour. He submitted to it. He endured it. He overcame in it. And He warned His disciples — and us — that the danger of the last days is not the hour itself, but sleeping through it. Escape theology is the sleep of the flesh. Watchfulness is the strength of the Spirit. Blessed are those servants whom the Lord finds awake in the second and third watches. --- Beloved, the hour is coming. The cup is appointed. The watches are unfolding. The night is deepening. Do not sleep as others do. Do not seek escape as others do. Do not shrink from the cup the Father places before His people. Watch. Pray. Endure. Stand. For the Son of Man will come in the watches of the night, and blessed are those servants whom He finds awake.
