@Boneyardsafari The Big E also had more of a cruiser type hull, her 4 rudders and 8 reactors definitely made her a unique ship. Her true top speed still not known to the wider public.

Carrier comparison, USS Enterprise CV-65 above and USS Forrestal CV-59 below. The obvious change was the island structure, Big E had the island further back with two elevators in front and one behind. Forrestal had two elevators behind the island and one in front.

@UnwantedBlog Even if Douglas had delivered the B-19 on time it wouldn’t have made any difference. Boeing knew this with the B-15, thats why on the B-17 they use the power of the engines, not for size, but for speed, payload and altitude. Thats why the B-17 was so revolutionary.

The XB-19 was a giant of a plane, but impressively obsolete by the time it flew. Had it been put into service enemy fighters would have turned it into mincemeat as its range was relatively low when loaded with ordnance and its service ceiling a mere 23K ft.

The (promising?) Boeing Model 908-909 was a contender for the USAF single engine multi-role fighter project in the 1970s. It lost out the General Dynamics 401, which later became the F-16. This mock-up doesn't look quite right, to my untrained eye, but was as far as it went!
