Having guardians in schools is one of the most effective ways to ensure highly trained personnel are in place to respond to an active assailant. HB 757 extends the guardian program to postsecondary institutions, ensuring students have access to safe and secure learning environments. Thank you @michellesalzman and Senator Don Gaetz for leading this important effort to strengthen school safety at Florida’s colleges and universities.

Today, the State Board of Education honored two exceptional students, Monae Hylor and Mathias Lumbi. Monae completed the ACCESS program at The College of the Florida Keys to develop career preparation skills while building independence and self-confidence. She is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Mathias, a fourth grader at Poinciana Elementary School in @keysschools, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2023. Throughout months of treatment, he never lost his commitment to learning. Recently, Mathias proudly rang the bell to celebrate his remission. Their resilience and dedication serve as a powerful reminder that through hard work and determination, success is always within reach.

Another courtroom loss for @FloridaEA and @UnitedFacultyFL. Money that should be going to support Florida’s teachers was once again wasted on a frivolous lawsuit they were never going to win. They walked away because they know the truth: transparency matters. Posting syllabi and reading lists for postsecondary students is simply the right thing to do.

There was much to celebrate in January. This month’s newsletter touted Florida’s historic graduation rate and #1 ranking for Education Freedom by @ALEC_states. The newsletter also highlighted recent events, including Celebrate Literacy Week, the Florida Future Educators of America Conference, and The Great Debate. In recognition of America’s upcoming 250th birthday, teachers were encouraged to share the books What Is America? and F Is for Flag with their students. Today, @GovRonDeSantis awarded more than $20 million through the LINE program to strengthen nursing education across Florida. This investment supports student scholarships, faculty recruitment and retention incentives and robust hands-on training at our state colleges. The Free State of Florida leads the nation in workforce education and building a strong nursing pipeline is one of the many ways we are achieving this!

On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we honor a leader who believed education was essential to opportunity. A leader who dreamed that children in America would "not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." May we continue his legacy by providing high-quality education to all students and emphasizing the importance of lifelong learning. #MLKday
