Saddened to learn of Jon Henner’s passing. @jmhenner He was ready to say things that needed to be said. This was one of his favorite gifs and I think it can symbolize how we are now called upon to take his work further. My condolences to Jon’s family and colleagues.

"Der Institutionpreis Deutsche Sprache 2023 geht an das Digitale Wörterbuch Deutsche Gebärdensprache (DW-DGS), das als Projekt der Akademie der Wissenschaften am Institut für Deutsche Gebärdensprache und Kommunikation Gehörloser an der Universität Hamburg angesiedelt ist. Das Projekt widmet sich der Dokumentation und Erforschung der Deutschen Gebärdensprache (DGS), sammelt gebärdensprachliche Texte von tauben Menschen und stellt diese der Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung. Auf Grundlage dieser repräsentativen Daten entsteht ein digitales Wörterbuch, das die Alltagssprache der tauben Menschen in ganz Deutschland widerspiegelt. So wird auch sichtbar gemacht, dass sich die DGS von Region zu Region unterscheidet. Mit dem Wörterbuch wird eine Brücke zwischen DGS und der deutschen Sprache geschlagen und allen zugänglich gemacht. Der Jury imponierten nicht zuletzt die differenzierte und lebendige Darstellung und Analyse der zahlreichen Gebärden und ihrer Bedeutungen."

@AdamCSchembri The more marked the description is, i.e. the more adjectives the person gets, the further they are from the perceived norm. Really made it click for me why some people are so scared of gaining some adjectives when it really shouldn't make any difference. /3

@AdamCSchembri The unmarked descriptions are short because the person described fits the societal norm, e.g. the descriptor "man". The marked description is longer e.g. "black disabled trans man". /2

'Cis/cisgender' is only a slur for people who do not wish to recognise trans people exist. I never used the term 'hearing person' about myself until I learned a signed language. Imagine if we said this was a slur (i.e., we're not hearing, we're just 'normal')?

Could numeral incorporation in DGS be the result of grammaticalization? Me and my colleagues @DgsKorpus investigated and our conclusion is... probably not 😅 But we did find signs of ongoing language change and made other interesting observations! 👇 mdpi.com/2226-471X/8/2/…

@ozyurek_a Because these words come from words that were pronounced with a k in Proto-Germanic! Many of the English kn- words are still pronounced with a k in German. knight = Knecht, knee = Knie and while knickknack isn't a word, knicken and knacken both are. All are pronounced with the k!

Good point why is it there? Like in knife!!?
