Azerbaijan’s deputy prime minister, Shahin Mustafayev, is visiting Armenia as part of an official delegation - his first trip back in about 40 years to the country where he was born, educated & fluent in Armenian. Mustafayev was born in 1965 in Armenia and studied in Noyemberyan, where his family was reportedly from the village of Jujevan.

@NYCMayor Interesting framing of “genocide” while Armenians continue to live in Azerbaijan today, and Azerbaijanis were fully displaced from Armenia. Facts tend to make these narratives a bit more complicated than the slogans suggest.

Today marks the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. As we honor the 1.5 million Armenians murdered by the Ottoman Empire across modern-day Turkey, Syria, and Armenia, we must refuse to let history repeat itself. In 2020, the military forces of Azerbaijan and Turkey attacked the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh. In 2023, Azerbaijan expelled over 100,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, continuing the genocidal campaign that had begun over 100 years prior. On this day of remembrance, we reaffirm the right of the Armenian people — and all people — to freedom, safety, and self-determination.

Lithuania and Azerbaijan share a history of solidarity, with our peoples supporting each other during the struggle for the restoration of independence.
