On Friday, attendees of the Wakulla Springs Robot 3D Mapper Exposition had the opportunity to learn more about Sunfish, the autonomous robot helping @FloridaState researcher Ming Ye 3D map underwater caves in the Wakulla Springs basin! By mapping the basin — which provides drinking water to nearly 10 million people — Ye (@FSU_EOAS / @FSUSciComp) aims to better understand how our water is affected by the geological makeup of the caves it passes through. Ye, other hydrology experts, and the creators of Sunfish all spoke at the event, which also featured a live demonstration of Sunfish's mapping capabilities. To learn more, check out @WCTV's event coverage: bit.ly/451nz2e. @FSUResearch

“In the ocean, water isotope measurements can track precipitation, evaporation, freshwater runoff from rivers and ice sheets, and ocean circulation patterns, which serve as powerful tracers of Earth’s modern water cycle." Alyssa Atwood, an associate professor in @FSU_EOAS, led the creation of a global database hosting thousands of seawater isotope measurements collected over almost 50 years that will aid scientists in generating more accurate climate reconstructions and predictions. "A shark is a clear and imaginable agent of harm. It has teeth, movement, intentional behavior and the capacity to cause immediate bodily harm. In contrast, rip currents and dehydration are more diffuse, gradual and harder to visualize as 'attackers.'" Did you know that July 14 is Shark Awareness Day? 🦈 According to David March — an associate professor in @PsychologyFSU who studies threat perception — people naturally process dramatic events such as shark attacks differently than more common but less visible dangers, shaping how they think about risk before ever stepping onto the beach. March is available for interviews on how automatic and deliberate thinking shape perception, decision making and behavior. For more information, visit: fla.st/VT5JPYKF. @FSUResearch @FloridaState

“Very few scientists are expert gamers, so livestreaming games is a way to make scientific discussion more accessible. It shows that, despite dedicating their lives to understanding a particular domain of science, scientists are also people that like to hang out and play video games.” @ChemistryFsu's Kenneth Hanson is the host of Ask a Scientist Gaming (@ScientistAsk), a livestream series where guests — ranging from engineers to philosophers — play games, discuss science, and answer questions from viewers in the chat. In slide two, @FSU_EOAS' Allison Wing and Hanson play MarioKart 64 while discussing hurricane season, weather on exoplanets, life at sea and more. To learn more about Ask a Scientist Gaming and some of the @FloridaState researchers using video games to advance research, education, and training — visit: fla.st/NASH14QZ. @FSUResearch

Did you know that the Apalachicola National Forest is just a short drive from @FloridaState's campus? 🌳 In the spring, @FSU_EOAS faculty member Danny Goddard's class took a field trip to a forest site where students collected samples of local waters, looking for connections to the underground aquifer. Students used electronic and chemical tests to evaluate water quality, and conducted differential leveling to determine local topography. This environmental science capstone is an immersion-style class that meets outdoors — rain or shine — and completes hands-on projects in small groups. Students get to put their knowledge to the test in the field, giving them real-world experience before graduation. In a recent @CBSNews article, Amy Baco-Taylor, a professor in @FSU_EOAS, discusses the significance of a groundbreaking discovery — the world's largest whale graveyard. Located at the bottom of the Indian Ocean, the area is home to fossils up to 5.3 million years old, and one previously unknown extinct species of whale was identified. Also, the site is illuminating scientists' understanding of sea life like jellyfish, brittle stars, bone-boring worms, and more that thrive despite harsh ocean floor conditions.
