@thwacknicklaus I remember playing Maxfli's in that era and suddenly this Titleist ball cost $3/each. Was it great? Sure. It was also a marketing coup. The price made people think it MUST be better. And it pretty much coincided with the Maxfli getting killed by the Earthquake at the factory.

Not to be pedantic, but he didn’t use a balata ball. It was a Titleist Professional 90. Also wound but had a urethane cover. Much sturdier than balata. I came of age as a golfer right at the end of this transition (and just before the ProV). Great ball and it should be honored!

Its possible that somehow the 97 Masters isn’t appreciated enough. Tiger Woods used a steel shafted driver and a balata golf ball and yet overpowered Augusta and the field. He hit short irons into the par 4’s. Mid irons into the par 5’s. He went driver-8 iron into the 550 yard 2nd hole. He wins by 12. He literally played a different game from the entire field. All while swinging smooth and naturally. He would then change his swing and win the Grand Slam. And yet, somehow one can wonder how his career goes if he never drastically changes this swing. Would love to know the results of that alternate timeline.

@Sbyrne_91 Oooh another WF West truther! 6 of the best 9 holes on the property may be on East. You're right. All world (maybe even the best) greens. Holes themselves not awe inspiring. Rightfully in T50. Overrated in T20.

Writing about this in the weeks to come, but the 1978 Masters is the most underrated Masters of all time, full stop. It should be recognized as one of the greats and it almost never comes up, even though a 43-year-old man set the COURSE RECORD to win.

There have been a lot of innovations is the CBS coverage of the Masters, but the floating head of the leader from Butler Cabin that is superimposed over someone attempting a putt to tie feels like it should be brought back. (This is from the 1978 broadcast.)

Louie on #2, Scottie on #3 fairly obvious, Jeff Maggert getting lost in the bunkers on #5 to all but lose it. 5th hole in general and left tree planting...
