Inspired by Vienna I’m rereading my favorite novel: “The World of Yesterday” by Stefan Zweig. His descriptions of meeting Herzl are wonderful. I was amused to discover his alienation from Zionism was due to “the lack of discipline, quarreling, and constant opposition”. Tradition.

Stefan Zweig, in The World of Yesterday. It feels like we are in the midst of another great acceleration, that we keep claiming to see but that is in fact barely perceptible.

@KeironPim I'm so glad you're bringing attention to that clip--and I'm hugely looking forward to your biography of Joseph Roth.

Anyone interested in Stefan Zweig will enjoy this video (which I found thanks to @GeorgeProchnik’s excellent book on Zweig) — at 1m 20secs there’s some rare film footage of him at a garden party in 1933 that brings him extraordinarily to life. youtu.be/pTT6YrZJ2Xo

„For I regard memory not as a phenomenon preserving one thing and losing another merely by chance, but as a power that deliberately places events in order or wisely omits them.“ Stefan Zweig, The World of Yesterday * November 28, 1881

@richardjgodwin @joshspero I visited the bungalow in which he committed suicide, in Petrópolis, near Rio. (He fled the capital for good reason, despite Hofmann's derision). Although his final book—a paean to Brazil—was naïve, Zweig was brilliant at distilling the zeitgeist. This accounts for his popularity

Remembering Stefan Zweig on his birthday 🎂 📷 Kurt Severin, New York, 1941 "Not surprisingly, Zweig & Sigmund Freud were friends & mutual admirers - Zweig even delivered a eulogy at Freud’s funeral - & one of his eternal themes was the workings of the human mind." - Larry Rohter
