Apple just sued OpenAI, and the allegations are WILD. Apple says OpenAI stole its trade secrets to build a competing hardware product. The filing claims the theft happened "at every level," from staff engineers up to OpenAI's hardware chief. That hardware chief is Tang Tan, a former Apple VP who spent 24 years there running iPhone and Watch design. Apple says he told job candidates to bring real Apple parts to interviews for "show and tell." Batteries, logic boards, chips, physically carried in by people still working at Apple. Another ex Apple engineer allegedly kept his work laptop and used it to pull confidential files after joining OpenAI. Apple claims over 400 of its former employees now work at OpenAI. This is the same OpenAI that partnered with Apple in 2024 to put ChatGPT on the iPhone. Two years later they're accused of building rival hardware off stolen Apple designs. OpenAI denies it, saying it has no interest in anyone's trade secrets. There's no dollar figure yet. Apple wants damages, an injunction, and every secret handed back. And it all lands right as OpenAI is preparing for one of the biggest IPOs in history.
