@MattDursh There are many bridges a whole lot worse than this in Chicago. This would be as bad as the average bridge there.

As a bridge expert, a few things and the answer: how long does this bridge have left? 1. The vertical split at deck and beam referred to in video is an expansion joint and is normal, albeit leaking. 2. The leaking expansion joint, combined with deicing salts, is slowly trickling chlorides down the column and the train crash wall. To contribute to the repair of this bridge the expansion joints should be replaced to prevent water leaking from the superstructure to the substructure. 3. The solid train crash wall at the ground level has concrete spalling with exposed transverse rebar. This is readily repairable with mortar or carbon fiber. This spalling here is of concern, but for the crash wall would not normally warrant a closure, but should be repaired promptly. 4. Now for the circular column, which is alarming and has me scratching my head. This video is not clear enough to show that what we are seeing is actually exposed rebar. There are no signs of concrete. The rebar would be spaced up the column to where concrete could be seen between exposed rebar. This leads me to believe this column has already received a carbon fiber reinforced polymer wrapping and that is what we are seeing in exposed. This would explain not seeing any concrete on the column. The CFRP wrap is installed to add/restore structural capacity and to protect what remains of the column. 5. This bridge still has a useable service life ahead of it. This is the only location I can see that has distress and it can be repaired using the CFRP if it has not already been done so, or a pouring a wider column to encompass the distress and providing a new load path. Bridges are inspected every 2 years in the US and this bridge is no different. Distress like this does not happen overnight and has been routinely inspected since it opened. With a video like this, bridge authorities in Kentucky should respond to inspect the bridge and confirm structural adequacy is acceptable, that load posting or bridge closure is not required, and to determine the next steps for repair to maintain the structure. 6. This bridge is just east of the I-75 / KY-620 interchange on Cherry Blossom Way in Georgetown, Kentucky.

Do we have any bridge experts on here? 😳

@FreightAlley Craig, how do you think about the impact of smaller items (engineering/miniaturization effects) and packaging improvements that allow firms to ship more units per a given load? I'd expect we see those effects mostly over the long term, somewhat aligned with freight markets?

If you want to know how the economy is actually doing, ignore "retail sales" or "credit card consumption" data. These data sources are distorted by inflation, after all, if a product is 5% more expensive than last year, it will look like you sold 5% more of the same product, when your sales are actually flat. Freight volume data doesn't track the price of goods and therefore isn't distorted by inflation. It tracks the number of units shipped through the economy. Sell more units of a product, you get more shipping. Sell less, you have less shipping. You can't store freight, so there are no inventory games being played in the data. Retailers play games with inventory and discounting to drive sales, but this also creates short term distortions in consumer activity. Freight data doesn't have these distortions. Companies only move product around the economy if there is demand and since freight data is upstream, volumes in the freight market will reflect economic activity 6+ months in the future.

@TheStalwart OK fine, I think Boston's the one where there could be a little bit more going on, great seafood and good Italian, but it's a college town and college towns generally have bad food, plus you don't have the strip mall type options that you get in the Sunbelt.

It’s so funny that in 2025, people are still describing certain cities as having good food. No shit. They all do now.

I think more, and more specific accessorials lead to better, more collectable revenue for carriers - and honestly less frustration and billing errors for customers.

Someone on LinkedIn asked if LTL carriers will be adding new types of accessorial fees in the coming years. I've thought about this a decent amount - and here is my response:

Crazy. Has anyone heard or has this happen before? I ordered a new iPad from @Apple Delivery scheduled today via @UPS UPS driver knocks on my door and tells me this…. Then tells me that some guy flagged him down on the road (a few min away from my house) and told UPS driver he has a package for him (me), and he will take it, he’s in a hurry and needs it for work. The UPS driver confused, tells him he has to deliver it to the address, and keeps going. Driver gets in his car and follows him to my house, as the UPS driver gets out of van, the guy goes up to his door and says he needs it now, pulls out an ID to show him. The UPS driver made him sign for it and gave it to him. (Didn’t look at ID bc not required). The guy takes the package, gets in his car, and speeds away. UPS driver suspicion is now high, walks up to my house to verify and see what’s going on. To his surprise/fear - I walk out and confirm yes, I am me. …. Now we are waiting on police. …. Fact 1: This guy knew my name and my address and that I had a package being delivered today. SUPER scary. What do we think the probabilities are? 1. My email or Apple account is ‘hacked’? 2. UPS system is hacked 3. Apple is hacked?

@cta can you explain how it's possible that you show a train due in 10 minutes, 9 minutes goes by, no train, and then you show the next train in 11 minutes? I can easily afford other options, and I want to use you but you keep screwing me over. You suck.

I will say that my first nighttime drive in one in Tempe was a little disconcerting but agreed, that is the way of the future.

First @Waymo experience in SF was so cool. Autonomous vehicles are going to change the rider experience. Gone are the days of my 4.74 ⭐️ rating. Gone are the days of annoying music chosen by the Uber driver. Gone are the days of tipping the driver.
