Today the #FBI and @TheJusticeDept announced an international law enforcement operation that took down SocksEscort, a global malicious proxy service, seizing dozens of servers and domains and freezing millions of dollars in cryptocurrency. In 2025, the #FBI and UK partners secured the arrest of a key member of Scattered Spider, a #cyber criminal group linked to 120 network intrusions and more than $115 million in ransom payments. Our investigation revealed how heavily these actors rely on social engineering, underscoring the importance of phish-resistant authentication—one of Operation Winter SHIELD’s 10 Key Defenses. Members of Scattered Spider impersonate employees to deceive IT help desks into granting access, often persuading staff to add unauthorized MFA (multifactor authentication) devices to compromised accounts. By targeting large corporations and their third-party IT providers, they put entire industry ecosystems—including trusted vendors and contractors—at risk. Phish-resistant authentication makes this kind of attack much harder to pull off. Security keys and passkeys are bound to a specific trusted device — there's no code to read over the phone and no way for a deceived help desk agent to register an attacker's device on their behalf.
