Lithium-ion batteries are a growing fire risk across the UK.
Firefighters are attending these incidents more and more and they’re often faster, hotter, and far more dangerous than traditional fires.
The @fbunational has warned that regulation and public awareness simply haven’t kept pace with the scale of use.
We need tougher product standards, proper enforcement, and investment in the fire service before more lives are put at risk.

Buckinghamshire FRS has failed to recruit and invest in retained firefighters, and now plans to close two fire stations and remove six fire engines.
Despite an overwhelming objection to the cuts in a public consultation, the fire authority is pushing ahead anyway.

Oxfordshire FRS and county council plan to close 3 fire stations, merge 2 others, and cut 42 jobs.
The result? Response times in some areas could rise from 5 to 20 minutes.

GS @unionsteveW also raised serious concerns about proposed cuts in Oxfordshire FRS and Dorset & Wiltshire FRS - issues that need addressing immediately.

A national health screening programme for firefighters is long overdue.
Firefighting is a carcinogenic profession- proper monitoring, early detection and consistent screening across the UK is essential.

🚨Today, General Secretary, Steve Wright and National Officer, Adam Taylor met with Health Secretary, @wesstreeting to press the urgent case for a national health screening programme for firefighters. Firefighting is a carcinogenic profession. Every shift, firefighters are exposed to toxic smoke, contaminants and hazardous materials that significantly increase their risk of developing cancer. The science is clear and the evidence is growing. Protecting those who protect the public must be a national priority. That means proper health monitoring, early detection, and consistent screening provision across the UK. Firefighters should not be left to face the long-term consequences of occupational exposure alone. We will continue to push for meaningful action to ensure every firefighter has access to the health protections they deserve. We will follow up with the department for health over the next few months.
