Firefighters are tackling 19 wildfires across England and Wales. The Tintwistle Moor wildfire has burnt an equivalent of 350 football pitches. Now is the time for immediate and substantial investment in the fire service. We must rebuild resilience to properly protect the public. @UnionSteveW on ITV News

Another major wildfire, this time in North Wales, is a reminder that these incidents are no longer rare occurrences. We are seeing hotter, drier conditions and firefighters are facing increasing risks with stretched resources. We need investment, resilience and preparedness in every Fire & Rescue Service to deal with these incidents.

For over 12 years, Zane's parents Nicole and Kye have fought for answers. Since 2019, we've stood with them, backing calls for a full independent investigation. The FBU will continue calling for Zane's Law to protect communities from contaminated land.

7 year old Zane Gbangbola died in 2014 when floodwater passed through landfill into his home. Surrey FRS detected high levels of hydrogen cyanide from the incident. Today, the government has announced an inquiry into Zane's death. This inquiry must be thorough and transparent. @TruthAboutZane

🔥Firefighters are battling major wildfires across Wales and England, but lack the resources to respond safely. The climate crisis is fueling bigger, faster-growing wildfires. We need real investment now to rebuild resilience after over a decade of austerity.

This is really concerning for the safety of the public in Kent. @kentfirerescue (KFRS) says its three height vehicles are "temporarily unavailable due to technical issues". bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Today #WeRemember Firefighters Terry Hunt and David Stokoe, who lost their lives at the Gillender Street warehouse fire in east London on this day in 1991. Their courage and sacrifice are never forgotten. The tragedy changed the fire and rescue service, leading to fundamental improvements in breathing apparatus procedures, firefighter training and operational safety. FBU General Secretary Steve Wright said: “Today we remember Terry Hunt and David Stokoe. Their loss reminds us that firefighter safety can never be taken for granted. The lessons of Gillender Street must continue to shape everything we do. That’s why the FBU will always fight for the highest professional standards, proper training, safe systems of work and the national standards our fire and rescue service needs. Remembering those we have lost means ensuring future generations of firefighters are afforded the protections they deserve.”

The government’s decision to extend funding for the removal of dangerous cladding to more lower-rise buildings is a welcome step. After Grenfell, it has always been clear that building height alone should not determine whether residents are protected from deadly fire risks. But thousands of people are still living in buildings with unsafe cladding, and remediation remains far too slow. The lessons of Grenfell demand urgency, proper enforcement and sustained investment. FBU General Secretary Steve Wright said: “Any move that helps get dangerous cladding removed more quickly and protects residents from unfair costs is welcome. But nearly a decade on from Grenfell, far too many people are still living in unsafe buildings. The pace of remediation must increase significantly. Those responsible for this crisis should pay to put it right – not leaseholders. Government must also ensure fire and rescue services have the resources, including more fire safety inspectors, to enforce building safety and protect communities. Grenfell must never be allowed to happen again.” bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
