Firefighters are tackling 19 wildfires across England and Wales. The Tintwistle Moor wildfire has burnt an equivalent of 350 football pitches. Now is the time for immediate and substantial investment in the fire service. We must rebuild resilience to properly protect the public. @UnionSteveW on ITV News

Fire & Rescue services have been cut in lots of places over the last several years & more cuts are proposed. As climate change means wild fires will become more frequent and more severe, its clear the fire brigade needs greater investment & more resources, not more cuts.

Covering the wild fires, Ed Balls asks: "Do you feel as though the emergency services were properly prepared" Fire & Rescue services have been cut in lots of places over the last several years & more cuts are proposed. The fire brigade needs investment & more resources, not less

🔥Firefighters are battling major wildfires across Wales and England, but lack the resources to respond safely. The climate crisis is fueling bigger, faster-growing wildfires. We need real investment now to rebuild resilience after over a decade of austerity.

Firefighters remain at the scene of a moorland fire near Dovestones Reservoir and continue to work with partner agencies to contain the fire and prevent further spread. Due to strong winds, smoke from the fire has travelled significant distances, with people reporting haze and the smell of smoke as far as Manchester city centre and other parts of Greater Manchester. Residents affected by smoke are advised to keep windows and doors closed where possible. Please continue to avoid the area to allow emergency services and partner agencies to work safely. Thank you for your cooperation

I don't know what the ignition source was, and I'm not going to speculate. My point wasn't about the cause of this particular fire. It was that firefighters are increasingly dealing with wildfires that spread faster and are more difficult to control because of hotter, drier conditions. That's why we need to invest in resilience and the fire and rescue service.

God this is awful! I hope everyone is ok Footage has emerged of smoke and flames billowing into the skies above Conwy Mountain in North Wales. The wildfire has been declared as a major incident and nearby residents have been evacuated from their homes.

An ignition source starts a fire, but the conditions determine what happens next. In hotter, drier weather, something that might once have caused a small grass fire can quickly develop into a major wildfire. That's exactly why firefighters are warning that the risk is increasing and why we need to be better prepared.

Careless behaviour is absolutely a cause of many wildfires, and public awareness is important. But that's only part of the picture. Hotter, drier conditions mean fires start more easily, spread faster and become far more difficult to control. That's why we need prevention, public responsibility and investment in the firefighters and equipment needed to respond to a growing risk.

@addictedtowxm @UnionSteveW @narindertweets No we need to stop stupid people, going out into these areas in hot dry conditions, thinking it would be a good idea to have a bbq, on a disposable bbq tray!!! Or chucking lite fag ends out of car windows!!
