Imagine enduring nine miscarriages and still finding the strength to hope again. Now imagine carrying a high-risk pregnancy, uncertain of the outcome, yet choosing to trust a health system to guide you through every step. This is what Bungoma County has made possible for mothers through strengthened Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) system. This system has transformed maternal and newborn care through better monitoring, timely referrals, and improved neonatal services. Monica, one of the mothers' from the County, has greatly benefitted from this initiative. Her high-risk pregnancy was closely managed, and when she delivered prematurely, her baby received the specialized care needed to survive, demonstrating how a responsive health system can turn risk into hope. The 2026–2028 implementation phase of the CHAK Bread for the World Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (#RMNCAH) Project places deliberate emphasis on strengthening gender and disability inclusion in the delivery of sexual and reproductive health services. This week, CHAK teams conducted a baseline assessment and held focused group discussions with adolescents (boys and girls) and adults (men and women), including persons with disabilities, at AIC Isiolo Health Centre and AIPCA Waso Health Centre in Isiolo County. The baseline exercise is designed to establish what is currently happening on the ground before planned interventions begin, enabling accurate measurement of progress and impact throughout implementation. CHAK is working closely with Community Health Promoters (CHPs), Community Health Assistants (CHAs), and Sub-County Community Health Strategy focal persons to strengthen service delivery at community level. We remain committed to increasing #access to and improving the quality of reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health services, including #HIVcare,#diabetes and #hypertension management in pregnancy, in line with Kenya’s FP/RMNCAH Investment Framework (2015). #InclusiveHealth #RMNCAH #GenderInclusion #DisabilityInclusion

This week, the CHAK–Jamii Tekelezi Program was privileged to host a successful U.S Department of State (DoS) visit in Meru and Tharaka Nithi Counties. The delegation commended the program for the effective implementation of the County Mentorship and Transition (#CMaT) model, noting its significant contribution to #strengtheninghealthsystems and improving the quality of HIV services at facility and community levels. Key highlights from the discussions included: a) Strengthening the integration of HIV Prevention, Care and Treatment services to ensure seamless, client-centered service delivery. b) Strategic planning for the transition of services from Implementing Partners to County Governments to guarantee sustainability beyond donor support. Since the inception of the program in 2021, the CHAK–Jamii Tekelezi Program has worked closely with the County Health Management Teams (CHMTs) in both counties, supporting the implementation of HIV Prevention, Care & Treatment, and PMTCT services. This #Partnership continues to build resilient health systems and empower counties to sustainably lead HIV response efforts. We remain committed to walking this journey together —strengthening systems, empowering counties, and ensuring no one is left behind. #CHAKJamiiTekelezi #DoSVisit #CMaT #HIVPrevention #PMTCT #HealthSystemsStrengthening #CountyOwnership

KMTC Deepens Partnership With Amref to Advance Health Innovation and Incubation Centres The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Board of Directors has reaffirmed its support for a partnership between the College and Amref Health Africa to equip students and alumni with entrepreneurial skills to create jobs in the health sector. The partnership, which has taken shape over recent months, focuses on training students in health entrepreneurship and establishing innovation and incubation centres to support the development and commercialisation of their ideas. Speaking during a meeting held in Mombasa on Wednesday, January 14, 2025, Board Chairperson Mr. Joseah K. Cheruiyot said the initiative will help graduates create opportunities beyond traditional employment. “Health training must prepare graduates for realities beyond conventional clinical roles. In today’s professional environment, success requires adaptability, innovation, and strong soft skills. Our students must graduate ready to respond to real health challenges in diverse settings,” he said. The engagement with Amref Health Africa builds on an existing partnership under the Learning for Life programme, through which more than 80,000 KMTC students and alumni are receiving training in health entrepreneurship and soft skills. The programme supports learners in identifying and developing opportunities in areas such as community health initiatives, wellness programmes, digital health solutions, and other health-related ventures. CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch said entrepreneurship and soft skills are essential for graduates entering an increasingly competitive labour market. “These skills are critical for improving employability and enabling our graduates to create opportunities for themselves and others,” he said. Amref Health Africa’s Chief Innovation Officer, Ms. Carol Mbidyo, encouraged KMTC to establish innovation hubs across its 92 campuses, describing them as spaces where students can turn ideas into practical responses to healthcare challenges. “These hubs can nurture problem solvers who respond to real community needs,” she said. To strengthen implementation, the programme has already trained 200 faculty members in Nairobi and Nakuru to serve as trainers and mentors, with the content also available on the College’s eLearning platform to reach alumni. The proposed incubation centres will provide structured support for student ideas through mentorship, testing spaces, and guidance to help innovations grow into sustainable solutions, building on the entrepreneurship training already underway. On the sidelines, the Board and Management will consider governance documents, including the College’s Corporate Social Responsibility, and the Environmental, Social, and Governance policies, as well as human resource governance instruments, to strengthen ethical leadership, community engagement, and sustainable institutional growth. They will also hold discussions with Campus Principals, who are in a retreat aimed at charting a path to the College’s sustainability.

𝗘𝗖𝗦𝗔-𝗛𝗖 𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝗶𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 This week in Kigali, Rwanda, ECSA - HC is convening the Health Economics Community of Practice (HE-COP) under the Thanzi Programme, bringing together health economists, policymakers, and partners from East, Central, Southern, and now West Africa to respond to fast-changing global financing realities. With Official Development Assistance (ODA) cuts, shifting donor priorities, and limited private-sector engagement, countries are under rising pressure to sustain their health systems. The Health Economics Community of Practice (HE-COP) has therefore become a critical platform for shared learning and strategic action. Over three days, participants are assessing the impact of shrinking funding, prioritising health spending, identifying capacity gaps for future health economists, and exchanging country reforms to strengthen long-term sustainability. As progress toward commitments like the Abuja Declaration and the Lusaka Agenda slows, initiatives such as the @thanzilaonse led by ECSA-HC are helping Member States adapt to new financing realities and build more resilient systems. Private-sector participation remains low, underscoring the need for blended financing models that combine public, donor, and catalytic private capital. Hosted with the East African Community, @YorkUniversity, University of Bergen, and partners under the HEPI and Thanzi initiatives, this workshop is building Africa’s collective capacity to navigate global shifts and safeguard essential health services across the region.

Today, NCDA and @UNIGEnews’s NCD Policy Lab hosted a workshop on advocacy priorities for access to NCD medicines, diagnostics and medical devices, bringing together stakeholders from across NCD civil society, WHO, international organisations working on access, and the private sector to discuss how to advance the #HLM4 political declaration targets on improving access to care. Participants emphasised that access to essential NCD medicines, diagnostics and other health technologies is a key component of primary health care, and that coordinated action will be needed ahead of next year’s 3rd Financing Dialogue to #ActOnNCDs.
