@MattWalshBlog Network effects - if your kids friends are on screen, where do you think your kids are going to want to be?

We do say no to screens. The problem is that most kids’ lives have been consumed by them. So the experience for kids who are not screen addicted is fundamentally different. Being an outdoorsy kid isolating now in a way that it’s never been before, ever in history. This is an objective data point, not just anecdotal. Kids on average are spending 50 percent less time outdoors, and that’s the more conservative estimate. Add in mass migration and the fact that people are having fewer kids, and having them later in life, and you have a scenario that is just simply unlike anything anyone over the age of 30 experienced as a kid. Something very real and very important has been lost. That’s just a fact.
Karol Markowicz@karol

I admit I find this entire thing perplexing every time it comes up. My kids were outdoors in the community even when we lived in Brooklyn and certainly since moving to Florida they’re outside year round with the kids on the block. Nothing is gone, you can say no to screens.

Today is an extremely important day A massive, landscape shifting technology is about to drop OpenAI will release ChatGPT 5.4. It is rumored to be the greatest AI model ever made. It will potentially have a 2 million token context window. It will be able to come up with novel ideas. It might even be open source. If you are not actively canceling everything on your calendar in order to use this technology and see what it's capable of, you will be relegated to the permanent underclass when the singularity hits A few times a year everything changes. OpenClaw was one of them. GPT 5.4 is another. During these events you MUST take action. You MUST see what's possible. First things I'd do if I were you: 1. Feed it all your goals and ambitions. Ask how it can help get you closer. 2. Give it your entire todo list, see what it can knock off 3. Plug it into OpenClaw and give it the most complicated tasks you can think of 4. Have it open next to all your work. Feed everything you do through it See you on the other side.

We are in the early stages of the end of the Pax Americana, during which global supply chains were assembled that supported an unprecidented prosparity. As that peace decays, production will re-localize and become less efficient. Everyone is going to get a LOT poorer.

Today, we’re launching Airpost. I’m 46. That’s not a cool age to found a startup. At least according to Twitter. I still call it Twitter. I’ve loved advertising all my life. Since I was 19 and my mom told me about a movie called “Nothing in Common” with Tom Hanks where he plays an ad exec whose main job seems to be shooting hoops with his creative partner. That sounded fun. Since then, traditional advertising has stayed… traditional. From my 1st job out of college writing TV ads for Snapple and Fox Sports, to leading product marketing at Airbnb, I’ve seen a lot. Now the AI era is here and an entire $1T industry is about to change. Who will change it? Why not me? Why not us? Introducing Airpost: a platform and service where world-class creative strategists use custom-built AI to build video ads. Fast. If you’ve ever sat down to make an ad with AI and realized 20 minutes later you’re still wrestling with that same clip… that’s why we built Airpost. Growth teams are busy. They’re asked to do too many things as it is. They shouldn’t have to be AI experts as well. Creative strategists shouldn’t have to stare at a white box trying to decide what to prompt. They should have a partner. That’s what we aspire to be. And that’s what we’ve built our tech to do. AI ads shouldn’t have to mean only AI footage. We have an exclusive library of over 300,000 video clips we’ve shot ourselves. Our engine uses these, along with client footage and AI footage to make the ads we deliver each week. We’re funded by the best investors and humans we know. We bootstrapped our performance creative agency, Ready Set, to 200 people. I was always told VCs didn’t add value. If that’s true, it must be other VCs, because ours have been awesome. Thank you Zach Perret, Nate Abbott, Peter Hebert, Max Mullen and all of the firms and folks who’ve believed in us so far. We’ve gone from 0 to $1M ARR in the six months since we quietly started working with early clients like DoorDash, Dr. Squatch, Calm and more. So far, every customer has renewed. To celebrate the launch, we’re giving away a superagent where you: 1) Put in your product URL 2) Get snippets of what your real users are saying on Meta, TikTok, Reddit and X 3) Paste them into ad scripts Comment “Airpost” and I’ll DM you the private link. It feels (a little scary but) good to be out there. Here we go! 🚀

The coolest idea for a war movie that mysteriously has not been produced would be the fate of the 30,000 Christian samurai who fled Japan when their religion was outlawed. The Spanish took them away, and sailed to the Philippines, where they used them to fight the headhunting Moros. After the Moros were subdued (that time), the samurai settled down with Christian filipino wives and vanished. But imagine a war with samurai and conquistadors battling Muslim Moros in the jungle What a show!

American Reindustrialization: Everyone is talking about what makes China so great at manufacturing- and what it will take to reshore to their level of manufacturing. But what people who DON'T make stuff are missing... America has a ton of factories. But these factories aren't for hire. Think about Boeing. Boeing has some of the largest factories on earth. But, it is dedicated to one thing; making planes. No matter how much I email them, they won't take an order of Ridge Wallets. Now, they do have an ecosystem of third-party factories to help them with special projects or excess capacity. But often, Boeing is the ONLY client of these factories. These factories are too specialized, or even by contract NOT allowed to take new clients without Boeing's approval. They are third party and for hire in name only. The United States is the SECOND largest manufacturing economy on earth. But nearly all of these factories are owned and controlled by the customer. Whereas in China, There are tens of thousands of FOR HIRE third-party factories. They are struggling, they are begging for business. But that is what new and emerging brands need. They need hungry partners, who have the time and space to help them make their thing. So if we want the USA to be the LEADER in manufacturing again, We DON'T need another Ford factory. We need 100 former Ford machinists fucking around in a barn. So, if you are interested in manufacturing, and want to open a factory, I hope this post inspires you: 5 types of manufacturing 1- CNC machines Pros: cheap to get started ($20-40k for a GOOD machine) Flexible. It can make basically anything. It has insanely good tolerances. And it is repeatable. The biggest con is that it is slow (for factories). You are limited to milling time. You need a bigger machine, or more machines, to do more than 1-4 widgets at a time. 2- Injection molding Pros: Possible to hit HUGE scale. If you need 100,000 of something, injection molding is great. It gets a very low cost per unit because the scale is so high. Cons: You are limited on material. The tolerances will be worse. You need a mold to get started, and that is expensive (and slow) to get set up. 3- Additive manufacturing This is 3D printing, and everyone thought it was going to be the future (it isn't yet). It just combines the worst of CNCing and injection molding. It has the speed of CNCing (slow) and the precision of injection molding (bad). The biggest pro is it is very easy to get started and prototyping. CNC prototyping is expensive and slow. And if you have CNC machines, you want them making money (products). Whereas a very good 3D printer is a few Gs And is great for getting an idea of if your thing can really be made. 4- Casting This is how you make giant stuff. It is like injection molding, where you need a die. But it is usually one-off, metal, expensive stuff. The pros are it's the only way to do it. The cons are it is very limited. 5- Cut and sew Everything above was for durable goods. But apparel is a trillion-dollar industry. Cut and sew is incredibly labor-intensive. The "cut" is for cutting fabric. This is now automated. You have a prototype, you nail down tolerances, and an automated cutter can cut your design out of rolls of fabric. But the sew portion hasn't really been automated yet (past sewing machines). It requires a human to move and fold the fabric. --- Everyone is trying to build SaaS to help factories. What we need is more factories. Better loans for customers and the factory. More access to capital. But really we just need 10,000 more. What makes China so good is the entire supply chain is there. From the button guy to the zipper guy... all on the same block. We don't have that. All of our factories are silos. But hopefully, this interest isn't just a moment in time And maybe this post got someone a little more interested in starting something.

I got involved in a bed bug case in Key West for a very nice hotel once. The bed bugs kept showing up in the same room. The branch would treat, it got better, but 6 months later, SAME exact room. I flew down, spent 4 hours inspecting, found them hiding in the popcorn ceiling.

TRAVELLING TO HONDURAS 🇭🇳 Many people will tell you Honduras is the worst, most dangerous country in Central America. The ‘Latin American shithole par excellence’ they call it, or at least I call it. Because of this reputation I wanted to visit. Paid a taxi in Guatemala City to take me to Copan, the ruins of the famous ancient Mayan city just across the Guatemalan-Honduran border. Drive took a couple of hours, bought the driver McDonald’s on the way. He said he had only had it once in his life because he preferred ‘Guatemalan food’. He also seemed confused about why anyone would go to Honduras Asked him: “What do you think about Honduras? Do you like it?” “Very bad country, very dangerous” “What do you think of Hondurans?” “Bad people, they are criminals” “They can’t all be criminals” “Most of them are criminals” Pulled up at the border. Driver tells me “okay I will leave you” “I paid for you to take me to Copan” “I’m not going to Honduras” “It’s only another 30 minute drive” “I don’t want to go to Honduras, you can take a taxi on the other side” “I paid you to take me there” “I will give you $10 back I don’t want to go” He gave me $10 back and then quickly jumped in his car and sped off, he couldn’t wait to get out of there The border is across a sort of dusty road in the middle of the jungle. There’s a small third world roadside village just behind it on the Guatemala side but the surrounds beyond that are just forest I go through customs, actually quite painless… possibly because there is nobody else there. The Honduran officers are all very dour-faced On the Honduras side not to my surprise at all there were no taxis. No settlements, just the road continuing on into the jungle. Ask Honduran officer, “where are the taxis?” “There aren’t any” “Are there any buses?” “No” “How do I get to Copan?” “You can walk” “What just walk two hours along a road in the jungle?” [in the most violent country in Latin America] He shrugged “Can I pay you to give me a ride there when you finish your shift?” “I live in a village nearby, I walk to work” “Right” Was sat outside the border post trying to figure out what to do when an old blue Honda Civic pulled up next to me. A German man, about mid 40s, got out and asked me in a strong German accent if I wanted a ride. Said yes, thank you. We started driving “Why are you coming to Honduras? Are you crazy? It is very dangerous and there is nothing here” “Wanted to see what it is like” “You are wasting your time and money and are irresponsibly endangering yourself” “Why are you here?” “I work in logging” “Logging in the rainforest? Legally right?” “Jah, something like this” “Is Honduras really that dangerous?” “It is, it is one of the worst countries I have ever been to with regards to personal safety. It is incredibly dangerous” “Copan is a famous tourist attraction don’t people go there?” “Copan is inferior to the Precolumbian cities you will find elsewhere in Latin America. It would not be my first recommendation for travellers to Latin America interested in Precolumbian archeology” “Right but still it’s quite famous” “Within a niche subset of people interested in Precolumbian archeology” Road we were driving along through the jungle was completely empty, you could see jungle valleys off in the distance “If I walk around on the streets here will I die?” “It is not impossible. If you are fortunate you might just be accosted and have your valuables taken from you” “How do I know which areas to avoid?” “I would simply eschew going out on the streets altogether. Even along this road there is the possibility of carjacking and banditry” “Surely you can walk freely in some areas” “Vanishingly few and even then I prefer not to. I like to remain in my home and take private transport between destinations” “I see” There is a small tourist town next to the Copan ruins the main jungle road passes by. The German stopped the car and let me out. “Good luck”
