@pbiscaye Thanks Pierre! We don’t have anything else on hand, but maybe distance to capital would be a natural proxy with within-country variation. The handbook chapter we’re working on (cited in the p&p) has a more complete discussion of income+state capacity channels, so stay tuned!

Interesting results @FergJoel and important to keep pushing on the different mechanisms at play in this relationship and how they may interact with each other! Do you have other proxies of state capacity (nationally or locally) you could use to test for similar heterogeneity?

Does wealth reduce the impact of weather shocks on the likelihood of civil conflict? @MarshallBBurke, Sol Hsiang, @tedmiguel and I find an interesting answer: it depends! National wealth is a much stronger moderator than local wealth. New AEA P&P out today aeaweb.org/articles?id=10…
