@PhillyInquirer Kind of hard for a reader to evaluate this story for him or herself if the Inquirer is not going to even hint at, much less actually quote, what she posted.

Jason Benetti will fill-in for Brian Anderson on Thursday's Men's Tournament coverage, The Athletic has learned. Anderson, who was clearly under the weather working with Charles Barkley and Dick Vitale on Tuesday's First Four, hopes to be back on Saturday. Westwood One and NBC did TNT/CBS a solid. Benetti now may complete the career cycle of working for every network.

@Gpasareus @shipwreckedcrew I think this is a preliminary injunction designed to maintain the status quo, while the court determines whether Trump can, by EO, shut down the department. And, if not, what can he do within the statutory requirement that the department exist, be funded, and operate.

@FiddleElphier @shipwreckedcrew Correct, but the judge ordered the reinstatement of 1000 employees. By what authority?

Nor is the person elected obligated to accept the truncated authority handed to him by his immediate predecessor, and accept the general consensus that his authority is bounded by the neutered practices of those who came before him.
Ed Whelan@EdWhelanEPPC

We don't have a quadrennial plebiscite that vests all power in whoever is elected president. The president's primary duty is to execute the laws that Congress has enacted. So a more refined criticism of the judge's ruling is required.

@Gpasareus @shipwreckedcrew The last question is the easiest. You spend the money because the statute says to spend it. If you don’t want to spend it, you’re the President. Veto the statute when presented with it. The statute doesn’t say the executive has X employees. It says to spend on the VOA.

@FiddleElphier @shipwreckedcrew Where in the statute does it say the Executive must have X number of employees? Are employees the only way to spend money? Why spend the money at all?

The only Cubs player to debut since 1970 to be more productive by bWAR across his age 25-to-28 seasons than Nico Hoerner (19.6) is Anthony Rizzo (20.0 from 2015-18).

@EdWhelanEPPC @CRTC_Nichols And in the instance of discretionary spending, the laws are enacted by Congress freshly every year. If Trump doesn’t want the VOA to exist (which I agree with!), all he has to do is veto the budget that funds it.

@CRTC_Nichols That's an unhelpful way to frame the issue. The Constitution authorizes Congress to enact laws that empower the courts (yes, absolutely including the lower courts) to block unlawful presidential action.

@DQuilici1 @jeffreytucker I’m all for cutting spending but maybe they should try doing it in Congress? And if Trump doesn’t want the government to spend the money, maybe he should veto the budget they send him that allocates the money and directs him to spend it. I know. Call me crazy.

We are not allowed to fire anyone in the federal government, we’re not allowed to cut spending in the federal government, and we are not allowed to appoint anyone in the federal government without the consent of the judiciary branch, apparently. So it’s just more spending, more fraud until the wheels come off.

If this can happen, the presidency is not real. Neither is the quadrenial plebiscite, nor the idea that the people are in charge at all. It's all fake. cnn.com/2026/03/17/med…

@timbhealey I wonder how many people were into it during the pool level. I was, but there’s a lot of chaff with the wheat at that stage. You do run the risk every year of US being out after March.

Before the WBC title game, a take: July is the necessary next frontier. LA28, with big leaguers, can be a test run for a longer All-Star break. After that, do the WBC during that time every 3-4 years. No more “getting work in” and “buildup” in-WBC. Better competition. More fun!

@TheAthletic @MattGelb @chadjennings22 @ZackMeisel If the entirety of the catching position is to exploit bad officiating, and it would be stripped to its bare bones by eliminating bad officiating, so be it I don’t think that’s true. But if it is, then it is. Fix the officiating anyway.

It’s no longer enough to know the strike zone. Big league catchers now have to learn every strike zone and better recognize the difference between, say, the top of 5-foot-6 Jose Altuve’s strike zone and the top of 6-foot-7 Aaron Judge’s.

@eric_novack @mfcannon I would tell them to learn that Medicare taxes only cover Medicare Part A, which is for inpatient hospital services, and propose that maybe that’s all Medicare should cover if the only argument in its favor is the dedicated tax.

The top 1% of Medicare enrollees have annual incomes >$376,000. The top 10% of Medicare enrollees have annual incomes >$130,000. Congress just let ObamaCare subsidies expire for families of four earning >$129,000. Let's do the same in Medicare. #3f446187-5e94-4c73-9acf-0d8608e12fc7" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">kff.org/medicare/incom…
