When Atari's last gasp, the Jaguar, came out, John Carmack was fascinated because it claimed to be the first 64 bit system. He really really wanted to work on it. Literally everyone else at id Software felt the Jaguar was going to fail. For one thing, it was being marketed by Atari, a company with a proven record of ineptitude. But also we were doing so well with Doom on the computer side, why mess with Jaguar? Even more obviously - why do it ourselves? Couldn't we get some outsider to program Doom for the Jaguar, so the mighty John Carmack could spend his time moving ahead on Quake or adding a few features to Doom 2? Nope. His mind was made up. The potential money made no difference, and he never used it to argue for the Jaguar. It was all about how fun and interesting it would be for him to learn it. Well, John Carmack is John Carmack so he got his way. 1/2

Linus's views on AI: - “AI is clearly a bubble, but it will change how most skilled jobs get done.” - “Vibe coding is great for getting into programming, but it's a horrible thing to maintain.” - “I'm a huge believer in AI. I'm not a huge believer in the things around AI. I find the market and marketing to be sick. There is going to be a crash.”

@GameSack I think it WD had just toned down the humor a bit (not removed it entirely) they would have been much less controversial. Personally I'll take WD's with all its flaws over some of the "accurate" translations I've seen.

Workin'. Do you prefer the Working Designs translation on the left or the literal one on the right? To me the one on the right is super awkward, no English speaker talks like that.

@GameSack A lot of people think they want literal translations instead of translator interpretations, but really, they don't. It's so bad. Conveying intent (correctly) and matching the vibe is more important.

@RetroRGB @GameSack While some of WD's writing is definitely goofy (they should've toned down the humor), I cannot stress how correct Bob is here. Literal translations from Japanese sound so bad, and WD did an excellent job making the language sound much more natural in English.

📢Important information on shipping to the United States and new tariffs. The United States of America has recently introduced import tariffs on all product imports and has abolished the "de minimis" rule which allowed orders under $800 to pass through US Customs without duties. As of Thursday 28 August 2025, 13:00 UTC, the applicable tariff on your order is calculated and collected at the checkout page. This is based on the country of manufacture of the products in your order. For example, our MemCard PRO product line is made in the UK, so the applicable tariff at the time of writing is 10%. Products made in China have a 30% tariff applied to them. This is automatically calculated and collected at checkout. All collected duties on your order are then remitted to the US Customs. For orders and pre-orders placed prior to the cutoff date of 26 August 2025, we will be getting in touch with you closer to the shipping date of your order, in order to collect the applicable tariff on your order. All US orders are shipped under "DDP" or "Delivery Duties Paid" which means that the duties and taxes are pre-paid on your behalf. This has the advantage that there are no further hidden costs from the shipping companies (where you would incur fees like "handling"). New orders placed after 28 August 13:00 UTC time include the tariff costs in the total and thus will incur no further fees prior to shipping or delivery. FOR MEMCARD PRO2 PREORDERS which were unexpectedly delayed past the de minimis cutoff time, we will be sending your pre-orders under the same "taxes paid" scheme and you will incur no further cost as an exception and as a way for us to apologise for the delay. This is an exception that only applies to the MemCard PRO2 product in your pre-order. If you have other products as part of your pre-order, you will need to pay the applicable tariff on those prior to shipping. This exception does not apply to **Retrotime N64**, **RetroTime GC**, **MemCard PRO GC** or **VMUPro** pre-orders. The Following products are Made in the UK and only incur a 10% tariff according to the current situation: - VMUPro - MemCard PRO - MemCard PRO2 - MemCard PRO GC - RetroTime N64 Adapter - RetroTime GC Adapter - RetroTime DC Adapter - RetroTime NES HUB - RetroTime NES HUB ADD-ON Over the next few days, we will be adding the "Country of Origin" on our website to all products, so you can make informed shopping decisions. For any questions on your pre-order, please contact us directly on discord (invite link is available on our page profile) or via email at customerservices@8bitmods.co.uk

USB C PD Li-On charging, regulators, video out, a GBA + GBS-DOL interface chip, and digital audio all on one PCB. I have had to design some serious hardware for my projects, but this is the first time I have tried to fit everything for my portable on one board. I'm tired man.

It’s been a long time coming, but I’m nearly done with what I’m calling the ⚡️ElectronLCD⚡️ This is a general purpose LCD driver for low resolution RGBS video inputs (specially designed for the Sega Nomad, but other video sources are accepted as well). Currently supports 3.5” and 4” displays (IPS and non-IPS) at 320x240p. A powerful OSD engine has been developed with individual setting options for modifying the video output as well as quickly switching to known-good presets. Thanks to @iFixRetro for all of your guidance throughout this project! If all goes well, then I’m expecting to have these available for purchase at the end of September.

@virtua_shenmue @ElectronShep My understanding is that it is a 640x480 image in a 720x480 frame, very odd tbh. Especially considering 720x480 is the EDTV standard I believe, and the Dreamcast uses RGBHV for output.

@ElectronShep I had heard 720x480 was a common misconception...? My bias was confirmed when I first got my Gefen VGA-DVI Scaler Plus a decade ago--the source shows 640x480? Love your work, cannot eait to see progress!

⚡️Update on the Dreamcast project I've got going!⚡️ You can see that the off-the-shelf Hyperkin converter generates a 480p HDMI output that has a 640x480p resolution (incorrect for the Dreamcast) whereas the module I'm developing properly handles the video to be 720x480p output. Those are when the Dreamcast is outputting via VGA. See @RetroRGB's awesome write-up on the Dreamcast for more information on this: retrorgb.com/dreamcast.html The final picture also shows the 720x480i output resolution via HDMI when operating the Dreamcast via its RGBs output mode. This might be the only direct-HDMI module available for the Dreamcast that outputs the proper resolutions??? I need some 240p games to further test that out... Any suggestions on games to test?

@ElectronShep Oh do that actually just squish it into 640x480 instead of cropping it properly? That's a bummer, but not surprising.

@Finakechi @cyothevile It took me a while to get back to you all on this, but I can confirm that a 240p source from the DC works with my module! Whether the HDMI sink supports it is a different story, but it is accepted at the analog input and properly transmitted on the HDMI output!

Over 6 months ago, I purchased a "untested" Complete Treamcast bundle from eBay. Upon receiving it. It was obvious that the original TFT screen was broken due to showing coloured lines and bad contrast. So I scoured all the usual places, AliExpress etc, with no luck on sourcing an original panel. I finally found a new HD panel that matched the parameters I needed. It arrived, I lined it up, and epoxied it to the top frame. I then sourced a BitFunx DC to HDMI adaptor and a flat flex HDMI cable to connect it all up. This new panel combination will give me superior visual quality. I also removed the Brightness & Contrast wheels and installed switches which controlled the aspect ratio and signal type. I recapped the audio amplifier while I was in there as the Treamcast had built in audio with 2 small speakers. The original Treamcast PSU was custom made which was super cheaply made and needed to be put in the trash. I wired up a PicoPSU as it would just "drop-in" due to screw hole placement in the bottom casing. I added USB-C with a custom printed mount at the back. A GDEMU was added with a 3D printed mount which was remixed by me to hold a fan to keep things cool. Obviously a ressetable fuse and rechargeable clock battery were needed. Lastly, I replaced all the microswitches in the controllers as they were worn.
