The NBA combine measures altitude, but we also need to measure attitude. Combine digits are coming out, and I'm refreshing @DraftExpress' page just like everyone else. But let me tell you about my combine numbers real quick because they were terrible. My runs? Slow. My vertical leap? I couldn't jump over a piece of paper. My weight? Too much good caf food. According to recorded measurements, I had no business being in the NBA. That's part of why I fell to the second round. The rest is history, because the combine missed a lot. It didn't measure my heart. Didn't measure my basketball IQ, my ability to read defenses, my willingness to put in extra work when nobody was watching. And it definitely didn't measure the dog in me. I'm as interested as anyone in seeing who ran what speed and who posted what vertical. Numbers matter. They give you data points, for sure. But that picture isn't complete until you see them play. I need to see games. Five on five. One on one. Dog work without AC or windows or well-paid trainers. Not workouts on air with nobody guarding you. The combine measures altitude, but we also need to measure attitude. You can't get that from a stopwatch or how high someone jumped. You get that from watching a hooper compete when the game is on the line and there's someone in his face who doesn't want him to score. Some of the best players I ever played with or against would've looked average on paper at the combine. Some guys who tested off the charts never made it. The tape tells you more than the measurements ever will, but you need both to really know what you're looking at. I say all that to say, enjoy these numbers but don't make any decisions solely based off them.
