@BarbieriSue Something I’ve wanted to get to grips with for quite sometime… spatial and temporal variability in sync tag detection rate, position rate and positioning error in VPS arrays. Got a few data sets to play with too

Sync tag detections in our vps array vary with receiver. We looked at # of sync tag detections divided by expected detections (receivers in range * ping rate). Large differences with receiver, no habitat obstruction and not due to tagged fish collections. Anyone else have this?

Faced with barriers to migration, how do animals respond? We found that some sea lamprey stay put downstream of weirs, and others wander substantial distances. In our new paper we examine the patterns, causes and consequences of this variation doi.org/10.1111/fwb.13…

A project ~5y in development but on site <6h to remove 1.3m high & 9m wide weir and >100y of river fragmentation. Opened ~11km to free #fishpassage & #geomorphology #WeirTodayGoneTomorrow #damremovaleurope #UAP Upper Aire Project @PeteTurnerEA wildtrout.org/wttblog/newfie…

On the #WTTBlog our @ProfJGrey walks us through the removal of Newfield Bridge weir on the Aire: wildtrout.org/wttblog/newfie… Response time of the #trout was impressive! #fishpassage #geomorphology #LetItFlow #damremoval

Tagged sea lamprey struggling to pass weirs in the Severn during their upstream spawning migration. A typical fate for migratory fish in our fragmented river systems, often occurring out of sight (+out of mind?). Read the full story in our new paper here doi.org/10.1002/aqc.36…

Well this is exciting, my very first article has been published! Check it out if you’re interested in tagging effects and how size of smolts influence outmigration estimates. Thank you for a great collaboration @kwvollset @FisheriesRobert @ErlendMHanssen and more.

We consistently find that tagged salmon migrate earlier than untagged (see onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…). @MagnusHulbak figured out why! doi.org/10.1111/fme.12…. Larger fish migrates earlier - so if you have size limit of how small salmon you tag you get a biased outmigration date.

Salmon are very capable jumpers & swimmers but they also have major problems passing Annacotty weir. This ornamental weir delays their migration. They can suffer injuries & all waste valuable energy. Many do not make it upstream. Please sign the petition: my.uplift.ie/petitions/remo…
