To be fair it’s more like “let’s put more biological determinists in sociology” bc that’s how they measure what’s left wing or not; whether one believes social factors impact societal outcomes. It’s so ridiculous

And there you have it. Viewpoint diversity is simply a cover for ‘let’s put more Republicans in academia.’ And that’s an extremely dangerous position. How would a job call even look? One year hire a Republican? The next a Democrat? That’s absolutely crazy.

@jgo34 @timgill924 I, too go through these cycles of exhaustion. I can sympathize. If someone wanted to have a serious conversation about, say, why we see an over representation of black teen males in official crime stats, I’m happy to do that. But they don’t want to have a conversation really…

the debate about the lack of conservatives in academia is making all of us dumber. It's founded upon false premises & bad assumption about how ideology impacts academia, about what constitutes 'diversity' (dem vs. republican, really?) & is mostly by bad faith actors. I'm so tired

Ok, first of all, wow.... Extrapolating from one sociology book to the entire field is something. Second of all, there is a whole bunch of folks influenced by the work of Emile Durkheim, whose whole focus is societal integration. Jeffrey Alexander is a big one here.

@akoustov My sense from the one book by sociologists that I've read in the past ~5 years is that sociology today is predominantly practiced through various conflict theories, so even perspectives that posit cooperation as the fundamental structuring force of society would be diversity
