🧵@pkcapitol is a legendary Congress watcher, one of the best to ever do it. Honored for my @BPC_Bipartisan work on Congress's tipping point w/ J.D. Rackey to be cited in his final WaPo column. 🔗⬇️

If you want to look towards the future, not just the present crisis, this is for you. "Gridlock may look like stability; it is actually brittleness. Eventually, it will crack. In some places, it already has. A new generation will pick up the pieces and build something new."

My case for optimism -> "There will be an after.... American democracy has been remade several times — dramatically, unexpectedly, and often in ways that looked impossible until they arrived." vox.com/politics/48028…

This is like writing an article called "What to Know About How Other Countries Deal with Thanksgiving Traffic" and somehow not mentioning that only America celebrates Thanksgiving
Will Horne@Rwillh11

How in the world can the @nytimes publish an article on how other countries deal with gerrymandering/districting and not make the observation that most countries use proportional electoral systems that make redistricting unimportant in the first place? nytimes.com/2026/02/18/us/…

It’s hard to see the water we’re swimming in, but it’s crucial if we’re ever going to get out of this cold civil war.

"Things that become unsustainable," Drutman says, "*actually are* unsustainable." If we really think America is in a full-blown crisis, then our problems aren't going away on their own. An opportunity for change is coming.

"Most members of Congress will never face a competitive general election. They know it. They govern accordingly. "But two moderate Democrats who actually win in Trump country wonder if the problem isn’t the people — it’s the system. Reps. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Jared Golden, Blue Dog Dems who won R+5 and R+6 districts, respectively, have introduced a resolution to establish a Select Committee on Electoral Reform. "The committee would study alternatives to the electoral status quo: multimember districts with proportional representation, expanding the House beyond its 1929 cap of 435 seats, and repealing the 1967 federal law that prohibits states from experimenting with proportional systems." notus.org/perspectives/n…

America's electoral rules make us uniquely vulnerable to gerrymandering. But Congress has the power to *change those rules* and adopt proportional representation, giving everyone a voice no matter where they live. pewresearch.org/short-reads/20…
