She’s doing blackface to “protest” trans people, but all she’s doing is showing her ignorance. Both race and gender are social categories, but they are not interchangeable, and pretending they are is stupid. Race is a social construct where colonialism, hierarchy, and racism were used to justify oppression. Trans identity is also a social category, but recognition of trans people is backed by medical, psychological, and biological research. Racism was invented to deny people’s humanity. Transition is about being allowed to live as one’s real self.

Too many are too polite to say this. But mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination. The adhan - which declares there is no god but allah and Muhammad is his messenger - is, when called in a public place, a declaration of domination. Perform these rituals in mosques if you wish. But they are not welcome in our public places and shared institutions. And given their explicit repudiation of Christianity they certainly do not belong in our churches and cathedrals. I am not suggesting everybody at Trafalgar Square last night is an Islamist. But the domination of public places is straight from the Islamist playbook. Trafalgar Square belongs to all of us. It is a national memorial to our independence and our salvation. Last night was not like a televised football match or a St Patrick’s Day celebration. It was an act of domination and therefore division. It shouldn’t happen again.

I completely agree with @bjportraits A transvestite in Womanface is just as offensive as someone wearing Blackface. As a Black woman I wouldn’t sit there and politely engage with that. And I wouldn’t be expected to. If I got up and walked out everyone would think this was perfectly OK and the person in Blackface would be excoriated. As a retired sex offender specialist, I’m relieved that she involved the police. Unfortunately, many women cannot accept their partners are capable or such depravity and ignore it for their own mental health. They also blame themselves for contributing to the behaviour or marrying a “man like that”.
