Some Russian narratives can be debated; others, due to their sheer absurdity, cannot. NATO expansion is the stronger narrative because you can literally see it on the map. It can be rejected on the grounds that Ukraine was not about to join NATO, no strategically important NATO weapons were being deployed in Ukraine, and no significant NATO presence existed there. Ergo, there was no immediate danger to Russian national security and no threat that required preemptive action. The repression of Russian speakers is a much weaker narrative. Most of Ukraine spoke Russian, making it difficult to argue that such a large share of the population was facing systematic repression. Ukrainian history contains numerous pogroms, against Jews and Poles, but none directed at ethnic Russians or Russian speakers. There was no longstanding ethnic conflict in eastern Ukraine. The conflict was, to a significant extent, artificially exported from Russia, from the use of actual Russian troops to the organization of local criminals as political activists and functionaries. There is no meaningful way to debate the biolabs narrative. It is like debunking witchcraft. I have faith that the intensity with which Russia is spreading this particularly irrational narrative through its network of agents will help sober up those who were on the fence about whether Russia is truly that malicious and dangerous. Yes, it is.

Today, only 9–10 may remain. Operation Spiderweb reportedly destroyed 12 Tu-22M3s at the Olenya, Belaya and Dyagilevo airbases in June 2025. Three more crashed in the Irkutsk region in 2024, 2025 and June 2026. In total, Russia may have lost or sustained damage to 24 of these aircraft. Production ended in 1993, no replacement program exists, and spare parts are so scarce that even limited damage can result in an aircraft being written off or cannibalized. The Backfire-C can carry up to 24 tons of weapons, including Kh-22 missiles repeatedly used against Ukraine. Moscow is losing a strategic strike fleet it cannot readily rebuild.
