I didn't grow up frum so there are things that are still new to me all the time. I knew that you are supposed to say the shema before going to sleep. What I learned from my wife is that parents sing it to their newborns. It is fast becoming my favorite Jewish custom.

@HormoneHangover I have chronic pain and don’t care about proving myself to anyone. I just wanted the baby and couldn’t care less about any of the trappings of pregnancy. I brag about managing to go through the entire thing without any added trauma, mental or physical. I wish THAT were the goal.

I think unmediated birth is a great feat of endurance and it makes sense to be proud of yourself if you pulled it off. I also think it makes total sense to say “I don’t feel the need to prove myself through suffering” and enjoy the epidural. I’ve done it both ways

ADHD is a 24 hour condition that will change as the child ages but will severely impact their future and entire trajectory. It can be treated by low-cost medications that are off patent and have recognizable and addressable side effects. To me the cost-benefit analysis is a no-brainer, but i understand that many parents don't want to 'medicate' their child. I strongly recommend to most parents with children with ADHD to consider a trial of medication.

My sweet sisters, can we hold space to discuss period poos? 😔 Like why can’t the period just be the bleeding alone? Why must there be 100 other symptoms. I understand the biology of what causes period poo, but I just can’t accept the pooping itself. It’s so much🥲😭

Take the musical Hamilton. The prose of it can be translated to other languages. But the rhythm, the interior rhymes, the use of words that aren't actually related but *sound* related, the linguistic fun of it... it can't be. Or at least, it can't be translated *with* the prose

@BriannaWu I really appreciate this, it’s EXACTLY how I feel. I volunteered to enlist in the IDF when I was 17, so I’ve always seen it as a bunch of kids. Just kids, with the weight of the world and country’s existence in their shoulders. Hence why I felt obligated to do my part.

Y’all can mock me, but I 1000% stand by what I said yesterday. Your view of the IDF changes when you visit Israel. It really just is everyone’s kids doing mandatory service for their country. The day I visited an IDF base I had to wait 20 minutes for my escort. And I’m sitting the the gate watching a guy that’s maybe 22 give orders to a bunch of 18-year-olds. You could tell he was going to grow and become a leader, but just wasn’t there yet. He’s kind of nervously going through this clipboard trying to figure out what to do when everyone is looking to him for leadership. One girl in the briefing is this kind of overweight goth whose uniform was baggy. And she’s whispering with this girl who’s tall and beautiful and has her uniform tailored gorgeously and they are obviously best friends. And I’m sitting there, watching this kind of nerdy guy with acne holding an assault rifle just staring at the taller, older girl kind of infatuated with her. The whole scene was just really sweet and young adult and entirely human. These kids were the lucky ones, by the way. They served on a base where media figures like me show up. Their classmates are literally over in Gaza and the West Bank worried about getting blown up by terrorists.

@neontaster Lack of reliability, at least for now. We don’t dx ADHD this way either, the brain scans aren’t reliably definitive enough in both directions. Self-reporting accounts for a LOT of diagnoses. Definitive tests are likely the future, but they’d likely dovetail rather than replace.

I have a very non-confrontational question about this: If brain scans show trans people are distinctly different than cis people, why isn't a brain scan part of the diagnosis for transgenderism? Why is self-reporting enough for one?
Jessica Riedl 🧀 🇺🇦@JessicaBRiedl

I HATE having to address transgender issues, but the bad-faith ignorance is astounding.🧵 My feed has been filled with conservatives attacking transgenderism as a mental illness with no legit biological basis. Which is medically, demonstrably FALSE. Yes, transgender women are obviously not biologically identical to cis women. However, most also are not biologically identical to cis men either. Countless, broadly accepted medical studies have found that most transgender individuals have brain anatomy and functioning – and often hormonal, chromosomal, and genetic traits – that more closely match their experienced gender. My Substack post in my pinned tweet links to dozens of these medical studies. The conservatives yelling “that’s impossible because male and female brains are fully identical in design and function" are not only clearly, biologically, wrong, but also hypocritical. The longstanding conservative belief in “gender essentialism” centers around such brain differences as the basis for male masculine vs. female feminine personalities – as they remind us every time a liberal mom tries to raise her baby boy with barbie dolls to reject masculinity. If conservatives suddenly believe that the brain is genderless, then they are endorsing the more radical leftist idea that male masculinity and female femininity are entirely social constructs that can be erased anytime. Any takers on that theory? I didn’t think so. Typical male and female brains contain subtle but real differences. And because our genes contain a full blueprint for both male and female development, it is possible even for some people with XX or XY genes to experience chemical changes in the womb that alter some of the gender development signals, particularly to the brain. This all relates to the assertion that transgender people “live under the delusion that they can change their sex.” No, we don’t. The point is that most transgender people were already born with biological differences relative to cisgender people. They aren’t trying to “change their sex” because, biologically, they never completely developed as the other sex to begin with. As a trans person, I did not wake up and decide to “change my sex.” I knew from age 4 that something was off with my gender, and later participated in several gender medical studies that confirmed a more female brain chemistry/architecture/functioning, hormone levels, and other biological characteristics. Most people who transition are merely aligning the rest of their body with other observable biological gender aspects (mostly in the brain) that emerged before birth. So, no, a trans woman is not the same as a cis woman. But she is probably not biologically identical to a cis male either. While the scientific discoveries continue to evolve (particularly in identifying the key genes), it has been firmly, medically established that transgenderism does indeed have an observable, biological basis. So it would be nice if more of the conservatives (and some liberals) who pride themselves on “standing up for truth and basic gender science” actually bothered to read and understand the scientific research. And if you are too invested in hating trans people to accept that gender science is more complicated than the simplified model you learned in 10th grade biology, well, as conservatives love to remind everyone else, “facts don’t care about your feelings.”

Did I miss the Amnesty, UN, or Red Cross campaign condemning the missile attacks on Israeli civilians? No urgent statements about schools, hospitals, or homes being off-limits? No reminder that murder isn’t self-defense? Or is that all negotiable when the victims are Jews?

Exactly why did the prosecution abandon its rebuttal case? Was it recognition that the gig was up and Whelcher would be destroyed and exposed as a fraud who did nothing scientific? Did Hartnett all of a sudden become unimportant? Or was it an example of the prosecutor reading the room (no pun intended) and thinking about number 1 above all else? If Hartnett was recalled, she would have been vigorously examined about the holes in the hoodie? What might that have revealed about Brennan’s intent or “mistake” regarding the hoodie stunt? If Whelcher had been recalled, he would have been confronted about the x-rays he never saw but which we know were in the autopsy report. Was he afraid of what Whelcher might state regarding his failing to review the most significant x-ray in the entire case in order to preserve his own reputation? There was a realistic chance the rebuttal testimony of both witnesses would have placed Brennan in a very bad light by exposing serious ethical violations. Remarkable that the very last strategic choice of the prosecution’s case may have been the prosecutor placing his own interest above that of his case as a whole.
