This is a very good essay, which suggests that the era of Western post-war prosperity was an exception and not a norm and that the Western ideal of endless progressivism in terms of which each generation lives better than the previous one has come to an end. The essay suggests that political promises to revive what has passed are futile and that what should be done is to assist people to build resilience. This is probably accurate and I was interested to see that Mark Carney effectively took that line, quite explicitly saying that the era of continual prosperity has passed and that a new way forward now has to be found. He didn't use the term resilience but that is what it came down to. When I think of states such as China and Taiwan, ultimately those states were built upon resilience; prosperity only came later. I have the impression that in the West resilience has been lost and will have to be refound. Gift Link below.
