I wanted to hold my opinion on “The Odyssey” until I’d seen it. I know, weird. So, here it is: it’s grand spectacle with a fascinating moral core. It’s extraordinary. Also, the actors shouldn’t have said “Dad,” and the casting of Elliot Page is a pebble in the shoe - irritating and bothersome and unnecessary. @FloodedRealms Every time someone beats the trad drum about this I want to know how they'd actually feel living with their boomer parents/in-laws. Not some ideal of how things ought to be, but actually how would that be?

Ultimately, this is why multi-generational homes can't work in the modern West. Parents don't view that arrangement as a transfer of estate wealth to heirs they view it as levers of control to keep their children 14 forever.

My 20 y/o daughter and my wife got in a huge fight yesterday. Wife ends the conversation by demanding daughter turn her phone in and sending her to her room without dinner. My son to my other daughter: “She’s 20. I don’t even know if what happened is legal.”

@MATT___WOJ @FloodedRealms An adult person should not have an issue when living with multiple generations respecting the authority in the household. Grandparents relinquish authority when parents take on bulk of responsibility. Unless the 25 yo has taken on the bulk of responsibility they have to yield.

school is only hard when you're trying to get straight A's and check all of the extracurricular boxes to get into a good college
the reason your job doesn't feel as demanding is because you have to create your own benchmarks now, and you're probably defaulting to whatever management's expectations are of you, which is closer to C student as a baseline (below which they'd fire you)

IDK why everybody here tries to gaslight us into pretending that jobs are harder than middle & high school. As a zoomer guy, I was in all "advanced" classes in middle/high school since I tested as "smart", & lemme tell you: Middle & high school were HARDER than entry level jobs.

@Nobleshield It's not always possible, but it is a good bar to aim for. Alot of it is on player skill.
"Outside the dungeon" is a fine stopping point imo, especially at higher levels. That's actually where the last session of my West Marches game left off.

As a DM I feel it's important to have sessions that always end at a logical stopping point, preferably in a safe spot (I.e., no stopping in the middle of an "adventure").
This helps alleviate the issue where someone can't make the next session; their PC is just preoccupied and not available.
The downside is this means every single session has to be completely self-contained (although they can absolutely be linked to the same plot or story arc), so you are restricted to trying to fit everything important into a single 4-5 hour session.

@ScythianB It's just sort of in the air for some parents, especially older ones. This isn't really moral judgement, just an observation of a pattern.
My parents did not handle it very well, either, and I got off easy compared to my sister because I moved out before life 360.

@FloodedRealms My dad was one of the ones that had a hard time dealing with that transition. Even though I had moved out and joined the army and so on and so forth, I was in my 30s before he finally recognized me as an adult.

There are modern issues with this model. We don't generally have family businesses in post industrial society. I couldn't exactly go with my father to work at the nuclear plant at 14 and start learning the family trade of being a reactor operator.

I do think these ideas and attitudes are changing. Obviously I'm going to try and be better towards my kids should I be blessed with them, but the current generation of 16-25 YOs are broadly saddled with this attitude from their parents (exacerbated 100-fold by life360).

So we end up with the kids who can't tolerate the control moving out and sinking or swimming on their own, which is bad. But at least some of them make it.
The kids who can tolerate it simply never develop into real adults, which is far worse.

And I don't think that "well every family should start a business!!" is actually a solution.
But there are ways to allow adolescent kids to have ownership over and contribute to part of the family estate.
