Dumb comment. US has consistently helped countries in need, whether in an alliance or not. You’re just mad because the game is over. No more free riding on US taxpayers. To compare to drug addiction, you and most of Europe are in the denial and blame stage. Accept no responsibility for any of the problems, it’s daddy’s fault for not letting me get my next fix.

The internal politics of European nations and those of the United States differ, but at the same time, we have reached a point where NATO itself, as a functional alliance, is at least at risk and possibly nearing its end. Domestic politics will determine part of this, but both sides have stated that even if the institution might survive, the alliance itself, which is its spirit, is in mortal danger.

@ChrisMurphyCT Trump is ruining the economy partly to enrich himself and his bootlicking losers, partly because he loves attention and creating chaos, but also for revenge. US citizens rejected him in 2020, and now he's getting back at the country for that.

@PhillipsPOBrien The cowardice and apathy of the American public also warrants some attention. Asides from irregular No Kings protests, there have been next to no demonstrations, let alone strikes or civil disobedience.

When it comes time to write the history of the last 16 months it will be about the weakness of US institutions to stand up to Trump, but the growing willingness of other states to do so. Trump’s major mistake was thinking the rest of the world was as craven as the GOP.

@PhillipsPOBrien Agreed. The cowardice to not stand up to any destructive authoritarian is bad, but the cowardice to not stand up to someone as laughable and loatheable as Trump takes a special kind of depravity.

@Steven_Swinford Misleading. That's not what the FT article says. It says that fuel shortages may happen *at some point in the future* unless the Strait reopens in 3 weeks, not that the shortages will begin in 3 weeks. It's a somewhat fuzzy distinction, but an important one.

European airports are warning that will face jet fuel shortages within ***three weeks*** unless the Strait of Hormuz is fully reopened, according to the FT ACI Europe, which represents EU airports, has written to EU transport commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas raising concerns and highlighting the potential risk ahead of the peak Summer holiday season “If the passage through the Strait of Hormuz does not resume in any significant and stable way within the next three weeks, systemic jet fuel shortage is set to become a reality for the EU.”

@mynamehear Yep. Given that they could avoid some of the punishment that's coming their way, but they choose not to, I can only guess that many of them must have strong masochistic streaks.

Republicans could remove Trump now and *maybe* mitigate some of the damage in November, but they won't. They'll choose protecting a pedophile and an extinction-level election because they're afraid of the least popular president in history. Pretty hilarious 😂

@DPJHodges Trump's absence from public viewing may also be down to his failing health (hopefully).

@LindasCookies He also got $20 billion from the US Treasury Department after Trump approved it as a rescue package for Argentina's failing economy. So, never mind about the hands of leftists. Milei's hand is actually in *your own* pocket.

@LindasCookies Javier Milei's sister and advisor, Marina, took kickback bribes from suppliers of pharmaceutical products to disabled people at the same time as Milei cut disability funding.

@jbarro Important to note that though the US is mainly self-reliant for oil products, this does apply nearly as much for fuel oil. 60% of that is imported.

FT now reporting that European airports may see shortages of jet fuel within three weeks. While the US and Europe ignored and/or facilitated the Gaza genocide, the effects of this ruinous war on Iran cannot be denied or contained

@USA_Polling Well, Trump may legally need Congressional approval, but members can veto Article 5 requests for assistance. Truth is, the US have basically *already* left NATO, to all intents and purposes. Trump isn't coming to help any former ally. Never was though.

BREAKING: Trump "threatened to leave" NATO and "unloaded his frustration" at NATO Secretary-General Rutte in their latest meeting, using the meeting as a "venting session." An EU official says the meeting "went shit," and the "conversation was nothing but a tirade of insults"
