Africa’s largest payments infra provider just made its move onchain. @theflutterwave has chosen Polygon as its default blockchain to launch low-cost cross-border stablecoin payments for millions of consumers and global corporations, like Uber and Audiomack. This marks one of the largest real-world stablecoin deployments in emerging markets to date, spanning 30+ African countries.

Let’s talk Agentic Commerce more seriously for a second because I already see the “erm… acktually this x402 thing is a bubble.” Look, I will get you bullish in 90 seconds: (A) Payments companies are clearly aware of the benefits Agentic AI can bring to Commerce. @stripe, @Visa, and @Mastercard have all announced their Agentic Toolkits. Stripe mentioned AI/Agentic over SEVENTY times during their annual 2024 closing letter. Kudos to the team. It’s a very good read. The biggest Payment Processors & Gateways reacted first. Next, you are going to see: 1. Other Card Networks to follow the trend 2. E-commerce and Online Merchants will progressively start to look at what the demand looks like, and leverage the cheapest and easiest Payment Rail to integrate with 3. Fintechs & Neobanks will try to capitalize and deliver best-in-class user experience; would you rather buy something on ChatGPT or just use @RevolutApp? So, how is crypto benefiting here? Ask yourself this: - What’s the best environment to build programmable money? - What’s the best rail for accessing instant settlement? - What’s the cheapest and fastest way to send money, cross-border, from A to B? - How do I ensure AI Agents only authorize payments once certain conditions are met? Stablecoins. Stablecoins. Stablecoins. Agentic Commerce = an industry response to something we are all implicitly aware of: AI changed the way consumers act online. Adobe Analytics ran a survey of 5,000 consumers early this year: 39% have used Generative AI for online shopping, and 53% planned to do so in 2025. Top uses: research (55%), product recommendations (47%), finding deals (43%), gift ideas (35%), discovering unique products (35%), and creating shopping lists (33%). The missing step there is turning the Generative AI into Agentic AI, allowing it to execute a purchase on your behalf successfully. Oh, wait, we have a tool we can offer to solve for that now! (B) You should look at “Agentic Commerce” as AI-driven actions that can execute both (1) Payments and (2) Financial operations. Not just Payments. The same survey also showed that 27% of consumers have used generative AI for banking and financial needs. Top uses: getting recommendations for checking and savings accounts (42%), explainers on investment strategies and terminology (40%), creating a personalized budget (39%), and understanding the tax implications of financial decisions (35%). Let’s run this again: - What’s the best environment to build programmable money? - How do I ensure AI Agents only authorize financial operations once certain conditions are met? - What’s the easiest capital market to build on with liquidity and complexity? (Yeah, DeFi is an API heaven for agents: DEXs, perps, lending, vaults, RWAs, payments. There's so much they can offer.) Blockchains. Blockchains. Blockchains. So is x402 a “bubble”? Well, some money will be made on x402 memecoins, and some will lose a bunch. But x402 is on track to be successful. Is the protocol going to be the most adopted one for all these Payment Processors and their toolkits? Of course not. It’s an extremely competitive environment, and the biggest companies in the world are spending time and resources to find the best path to make sure they get the largest market share/financial upside. As long as Stablecoins keep growing and become more adopted, easier for merchants to own and receive, easier to keep on a balance sheet, easier to transact with, and easier for the average consumer to hold and understand, x402 adoption will follow. (Listen, I'm trying to get you bullish here. The truth is, I believe x402 is an excellent Trojan Horse and it will help facilitate Stablecoin adoption in the first place, but we can talk about this next time.) The next 5 years are set to be the most interesting ones for our industry, and it’s such a good feeling to see a clear path for Crypto to be complementary to AI.
