It's truly mind bending to me how these red states are forcing women to give birth while refusing to expand healthcare like medicaid. as these states rank highest in the country for low income, poverty, infant and maternal mortality. As a result of all this bullshit states like Alabama are suffering because hospitals are closing their labor and delivery units. So we're gonna see these other hospitals get overwhelmed because ppl are driving 2-3 counties away to come give birth. I would also bet that we will see these infant and maternal mortality rates go up. I believe 13 republican states refuse to expand Medicaid despite the fact the federal government picks up over 90% of the tab. In Alabama for example, you could be a full time employee making minimum wage ($7.25 a hour). be below the poverty line and still not qualify for Medicaid. So because of this they've made a crazy huge coverage gap. You're either doing exceptionally well at a job w good benefits, super rich and pay for your own insurance or you live in a box on the side of the street. The money Alabama could have got from the affordable care act would of been enough to cover an additional 280k+ ppl. But the state turned it down because they said it would have cost the state $220 million a year. However, expanding Medicaid in Alabama, according to public affairs and research council, would create an average of 20,083 new jobs per year and have an estimated positive economic impact of $11.36 billion. Once again proving that republican Jesus hates you.
