@lady_valor_07 These waiters depend on tips. $40 was too low. I would have tipped her well, divided among the customers. My son worked in that field, and I saw how much he relied in tip money. Since then, I make sure to tip them well.

$75 on $500 is the minimum acceptable (which means nothing of course) tip for good service. I usually tip over 25% but I don’t spend more than $50 on a meal ever.
I would never spend $500 on a meal unless I was comfortable tipping at least $100.
Server should never complain or say anything however. Once, maybe you get fired. Twice, you’re gone.

@lady_valor_07 That is a 8% tip you gave, which if her service was good was pretty much an insult after you spent so much on yourselves that all you could scrounge up was $40. Her telling you $120 was 24% which is on par for tipping now, low on some people as they expect 30-40%.

@lady_valor_07 Standard is 15% or $75...you should have given her at least that much. Anything over that is because she did exceptional work. Her expecting $120 is because she is entitled. You definitely screwed her on the tip, but her expecting a 24% tip is just as dumb.

@lady_valor_07 I found out at Olive Garden - if the server doesn’t get a 20% tip he/she is docked frim their pay for the difference - they must get 29% or it costs them to serve you

@lady_valor_07 You need to look at % not the dollar ammount. Tipping 15% is the absolute minimum, so that would be $75, and 20% would be if you really liked the service to that would end up at $100.

If you can’t afford to pay the 18% gratuity, don’t go to a restaurant where you expect to be waited on.
These people are paid less than $3/hour, YOU ARE EXPECTED TO TIP AT LEAST 12% EVEN FOR POOR SERVICE, and EXPECT TO TIP UP TO 25% FOR EXCELLENT SERVICE.
If you can’t do so, go eat fast food.

@lady_valor_07 If you can't afford a decent tip, don't eat out. The server has to "tip-out" numerous employees based on your final tab, not to mention taxes, which are imputed based on a higher percentage. You are essentially forcing them to pay you for the right to serve you.

That's an offensively low tip! Don't you know the standard etiquette is at least 15%? You tipped 8%. Her expectations are valid $120 is exactly 15%. This is why a lot of restaurants include automatic gratuity. Deserved or not, you Ma'am are a CHEAPSKATE.
