I've read every book Peter Hopkirk wrote. I cannot recommend him any more highly. Right after 911, I ordered a small case of his book, "The Great Game" and handed them out to people above and below me as by 912 I realize almost no one I was serving with in the C5F AOR knew anything about the history of the area.
