@8teAPi If it keeps China on the peaceful path to reunification, then worth it. An invasion would have created a world wide depression killing hundreds of millions just from poverty, even if it somehow managed to not go nuclear.

People are so fucking WEIRD about the subway. New Yorkers. tourists. People who’ve never ridden the subway….EVERYONE. It’s the largest transit system in the largest city in the United States. It’s never going to be perfect but it’s certainly not a war zone.
celia@_celia_bedelia_

I ride the subway every single day. I only take a car to the airport or if public transit isn’t feasible. I’ve ridden the subway at all hours. I’m not scared of getting attacked or assaulted any more than I am as a woman living in this world in any place.

TAX REVOLT DEMOCRATS: In the last few months I've turned from someone sympathetic to an income tax in WA state to dismayed that our legislature is violating the constitution, dismissing voter intent, and has no good plan with the revenue anyway.

Trump signed an executive order letting 401ks invest in private markets. The industry spent months lobbying for this. The timing is incredible. They’re opening the door to retail retirement money at the exact moment semi-liquid funds are gating redemptions, BDCs are cutting dividends, and the PC market is in a trust crisis. The smart money needs exit liquidity. The 401k is the exit liquidity.

@glangley @gustaf The question isn't whether cameras can help solve crimes. It's whether permanent mass surveillance of every vehicle in America is compatible with a free society. Voters in Washington keep saying no. I agree with them.

The City of Olympia, Washington chose to end their partnership with Flock last year. Over the weekend, Flock cameras in nearby Richland were instrumental in finding a suspect in a shooting in Olympia. Olympia is safer today because of Flock.

@resetbasis CA residents pay 1.5x-2x more tax per capita than most other states (all types of tax included). Is CA offering ~2x better gov services than states like WI & NH? If not, they hardly deserve more money.

Just one little tax, alright bro. Just one. I swear, that’s all I need to get me over. Fuck. Man, look. I need it, alright? One small tax and I’ll straighten my shit out. Yea, no, it’s different this time. I mean it. Man! Listen to me, alright? I’ve got a problem and I need help. Give me just a little tax this once. One fucking time man! All I’m asking. I’ll cut spending, put the dumb shit aside, and I won’t ask again. I’ll be straight, just need you to float me this one last time.

On the question of whether churches should be allowed to become mosques, let's remember that the Parthenon was originally a "pagan" temple, then was converted into a Christian church, then became a mosque. This kind of conversion is not historically unusual.

I've read every book Peter Hopkirk wrote. I cannot recommend him any more highly. Right after 911, I ordered a small case of his book, "The Great Game" and handed them out to people above and below me as by 912 I realize almost no one I was serving with in the C5F AOR knew anything about the history of the area. In 2026, if you have not read that book, order it now. Once you do that, pick another of his books, and read that. I'd recommend "Setting the East Ablaze" as a good follow up. amzn.to/4cMdlrC
