Candidates vying to be the new Secretary-General should come to next week’s General Assembly debates with ideas for bolstering the UN’s credibility on international peace and security. I lay out some markers in this new @CrisisGroup commentary. crisisgroup.org/cmt/global/pri…

Geopolitical tensions, political pressure and funding crises are putting the viability of multilateral peacekeeping in jeopardy. The number of personnel in peace operations at the end of 2025 fell to its lowest point in at least 25 years. New #SIPRI data on multilateral #PeaceOperations out now. For our latest installment in "the @UN is broke" series, Guterres stresses that member states need to change the Kafka-esque rules that force the UN to return $1.3 billion that it never collected (b/c states did not pay). documents.un.org/doc/undoc/gen/…

. @SecRubio and @antonioguterres discussed in a phone call today according to a State Department readout: “U.S. efforts to stop Iran’s unlawful mining and tolling of the Strait of Hormuz, including a draft UN Security Council resolution, presented by the United States and Bahrain with the support of other Gulf partners. The Secretary emphasized the overwhelming support of a broad base of UN members for these efforts.”
Secretary Marco Rubio@SecRubio

Spoke with UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres about advancing @POTUS’ vision for a more effective, efficient, and accountable @UN focused on peace. I emphasized Luke Lindberg is the right leader for @WFP—his appointment is essential to ensuring @UN operates with the transparency and accountability required to feed the world. We also discussed U.S. efforts at the UN to stop Iran’s unlawful actions in the Strait of Hormuz, and how the U.S. rapidly mobilized resources to support the response to the #Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda.

The GCC countries and U.S. have now gained support for their draft resolution on Hormuz from two-thirds of the UN membership. Two noticeable absences: France (among the final holdouts on the vetoed April text) and Pakistan. Besides CN/RF, these are two bellwethers to watch.

Update: the latest number of cosponsors for the US/GCC draft has reached 129. Two additions in the latest list are Somalia & DRC both Security Council members. Still no word on when this will be put to a vote especially in light of recent comments by China’s Ambassador (currently the president of the Security Council).

Double dose of @CrisisGroup in this helpful update on the UN Secretary-General’s race, via @IsabelColes. Adding my two cents on top of @RichardGowan1: “The less the P5 are unified on any one candidate, the more opportunities it gives for others to try and fill that void.”
Richard Gowan@RichardGowan1

"If we get a good energetic secretary general, there’s just a glimmer of hope that they might be able to navigate the storm." Me, ever the optimist, to @IsabelColes @ObserverUK. observer.co.uk/news/internati…
