Caloceras johnstoni from Somerset, England are early Jurassic ammonites, about 200 million years old, preserved in the Blue Lias. Their striking rainbow colors come from thin layers of original shell material (aragonite) that survived fossilization. These layers bend and diffract light, creating that natural iridescent shimmer rather than pigment.
