I keep being surpised at the math here. Even if Ukraine launched ~20 Liutyi kamikaze drones of 200k of which 3 made it through. Even if not all planes where scrapped. We are still talking about ~4 million worth of drones taking out ~200 million worth of the best Russian planes
🇺🇦 Unmanned Systems Forces@usf_army

Unmanned Systems Forces struck Su-57 and Su-34 fighter jets It has been confirmed that on April 25, at the Shagol airfield in the Chelyabinsk region of russia, operators of the 1st Separate Center struck two Su-57 fighter jets, an Su-34 fighter-bomber, and an SU of unknown modification. The strike was delivered at a distance of 1,700 km from the state border. "Hunting for Su-34 multi-role fighter-bombers and Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets is of critical importance for reducing the enemy's strike potential. The Su-34, as the main strike platform, is capable of carrying a wide range of guided bombs and missiles, delivering strikes on critical infrastructure, military facilities, and civilian targets at a distance of up to 1,000 km. Every destroyed Su-34 means a reduction in the number of airstrikes, saved civilian lives, and a decreased burden on air defense systems. The Su-57, as the most modern russian fighter jet with low-observable technologies, poses a special threat to aviation and air defense systems." — Commander of the USF Robert "Magyar" Brovdi. The estimated cost of one Su-34 aircraft is approximately $35–50 million. The cost of an Su-57 fighter jet reaches $100–120 million per unit. USF: One step ahead!

Prediction: The replication crisis will unfold like #MeToo. Everyone in science knows how bad it is, but nobody wants to speak first. Then it all comes crashing down.

@phl43 Yes, maybe there are "edges" or "corners" where they can't reach no matter how much they "grow", to follow the "jagged intelligence" analogy

Frontier LLMs are quite smarter than me in some ways, but much dumber in others. For instance, they can derive mathematical results much faster than I ever could, but they still get stuck on conceptual issues and will get sidetracked unless I send them in the right direction by explaining to them why they are confused. They keep improving and becoming more impressive, but this problem still hasn't been solved. I guess the debate about AGI can be framed as whether you believe that both kinds of tasks are on a continuum and scaling will eventually eliminate the problem or that LLMs get stuck on hard conceptual issues because they require a fundamentally different kind of cognitive skill and unless we start using a radically different approach we'll get stuck in a dynamic similar to the paradox of Achilles and the tortoise where we keep getting closer to the goal while never reaching it.

So, are archaeologists just, like, retarded, or what? I’m never going to understand this thing where educated people would rather look stupid than say something that violates their politics. It’s such a black pill. You really have to imagine of people like this that there’s nothing they wouldn’t do, no evil they wouldn’t countenance. They’ll literally just say anything. They can be made to believe anything.

David Reich on how much ancient DNA evidence has overturned so much consensus thinking how ancient cultures spread. "It wasn't peaceful, it wasn't friendly, it wasn't nice. Some of our archaeologist co-authors were just really distressed."

There was a massive DOJ study done decades ago that among people in Federal custody, the single trait career criminals had most in common was that they had all gotten caught as a teenager and the case resolved in a way that left them feeling like they 'got away with it.' More in common than race, than marital status of parents, than bullying, than presence of a father. It was *the* issue.
