Bush was defeated by St. Louis Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell in the Democratic primary. Her loss makes her the second squad member to be voted out this cycle, after the earlier defeat of Rep. Jamaal Bowman in New York. The race drew heavy outside spending, with pro-Israel groups like AIPAC pouring nearly $9 million into efforts to defeat Bush, who has faced criticism for her positions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Bush also had to contend with a federal investigation into alleged inappropriate use of campaign funds for personal security, though she denies the accuracy of these claims. The defeat of the racial justice activist and prominent progressive is a setback for the left wing of the Democratic party.
