The 2026 State of the Nation Address reportedly cost taxpayers about R7 million.
An average South African worker would need to work roughly 19.4 years to fund a single SONA event.
Nearly two decades of labour for one speech.
How many years are you working to fund SONA? Use our calculator here: freemarketfoundation.com/tfd/

during my time in Taiwan, I carried an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) that documented my purpose of residence, address, employment, and personal details, making it straightforward for authorities to verify who I am and my status. Taiwan, China, South Korea and other countries systems requires migrants to report to police within 24 hours of international travel and re-register any address changes. I also underwent qualification authentication, police clearance, and medical screening.
This raises an important question: How do we track migrants in South Africa? Do we know where they live or what they do? Why can't we implement similar accountability measures, mandatory reporting for international travel, address registration updates, and rigorous vetting processes including qualification verification, police clearance, and medical tests?
A transparent, well-documented migration system strengthens both security and integration.

NEW: Andre, his wife, and their 6-year-old son were approved to come to the U.S. as refugees from South Africa more than 200 days ago.
Three days before their flight, Church World Service — a left-wing refugee nonprofit working with the federal government — told them their trip was canceled. By then, the family had already gotten rid of their belongings.
Andre’s family is not alone. @realDailyWire spoke to multiple Afrikaners approved for refugee resettlement in the U.S. who received airline tickets, prepared to leave South Africa, and then suddenly had their departures canceled — with little explanation and no clear timeline.
Many say Church World Service left them stranded.
The irony: CWS is simultaneously suing the Trump admin over its alleged “discriminatory preference for white Afrikaners” while also playing a major role in resettling Afrikaner refugees for the federal government.

The Lindela Repatriation Centre was characterised by deep anc and bosasa related corruption.
Deportation systems in RSA are infiltrated by criminal syndicates.
Senior political leaders are implicated in deportation related corruption in South Africa
The Lindela Repatriation Centre, South Africa's broader deportation system, and its border control infrastructure have faced documented vulnerabilities regarding systemic corruption, syndicate infiltration, and political elite involvement. Investigations, judicial inquiries, and government actions have exposed major operational and financial failures across these immigration structures.
The Bosasa and ANC Connection at Lindela
The Lindela Repatriation Centre in Krugersdorp was managed for over two decades by the controversial facilities management company Bosasa (later renamed African Global Operations).
The Mail & Guardian
The "Cash Cow" Scheme: Testimony presented at the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture (Zondo Commission) revealed that Bosasa executives viewed Lindela as a "cash cow".
Former employees testified that during festive seasons, the company would intentionally inflate data or manipulate facility occupancy numbers to exploit the Department of Home Affairs' (DHA) "per person, per night" payment structure.
Political Bribery: Evidence from the State Capture reports detailed how Bosasa secured and maintained highly lucrative government tenders—including its multi-million rand monthly contract for Lindela—by paying extensive bribes, providing monthly cash allowances, and funding political campaigns for high-ranking African National Congress (ANC) officials.
Human Rights Concerns: While funds were reportedly siphoned off by executives, the facility suffered from severe overcrowding, compromised healthcare, and systemic human rights abuses. Organised civil society and groups like Doctors Without Borders (MSF) repeatedly flagged critical failures in basic services. Following the exposure of this corruption, Bosasa went into liquidation.
Infiltration by Criminal Syndicates
South Africa's broader immigration and deportation systems face a persistent threat from well-organised criminal networks.
Passport and Visa Fraud Networks: The Department of Home Affairs has routinely targeted highly coordinated syndicates operating across multiple provinces.
These syndicates cooperate with corrupted inside officials to execute "photo-swaps," illegally manufacturing valid South African passports and documentation for foreign nationals.
System Manipulation: Criminal syndicates exploit loopholes in IT networks, border control stamps, and status processing databases. Corrupted officials issue fraudulent entry and exit stamps to manufacture artificial legal status for individuals who never physically crossed the border checkpoint.
Institutional Responses and Counter-Measures
To disrupt the influence of criminal networks and insider corruption, institutional changes have been introduced across state organs:
Border Management Authority (BMA) Crackdown: Operating as an autonomous frontline border security agency, the Border Management Authority (BMA) has intensified internal investigations.
The BMA dismissed over 50 immigration officers and placed dozens more under investigation for facilitating illegal migration and taking bribes at major ports of entry like Beitbridge and OR Tambo International Airport.
The Counter-Corruption Unit: The DHA's specialized
Counter-Corruption Unit, working alongside law enforcement, regularly conducts sting operations. These interventions target localized kingpins and Home Affairs clerks attempting to sell national identity security infrastructure.
Increased Deportation Output: Under the Government of National Unity (GNU), the Department of Home Affairs has aggressively scaled up enforcement, executing over 109,000 deportations within a two-year financial window while attempting to clean out corruption
