@jennypotts 1. Hello. I'm Fred for Maryland. I work as a Software Engineer at an investment bank. 2. Studying Japanese and playing video games. 3. Probably DevBook. It was meant to be a Google Docs spin on something like repl.it . It required the use of Firebase and Docker.

@Boenau ‘walk-friendly, bike-friendly, transit-friendly’ is not ‘80 yr old friendly’ given the mobility issues that come with old age.

The US is going to have 30-40 million 80 yr olds driving because the built environment is car dependent. Baby Boomers are a huge reason for local govs to legalize walk-friendly, bike-friendly, transit-friendly neighborhoods. (psst, abolish zoning) msn.com/en-us/news/cri…

Overall outline of my TypeScript workshop is about done. I'm fired up. We're gonna walk through some fundamentals, learn generics and conditional types from the ground up, and even cover some advanced topics like discriminated unions and variance. Lessgo!

@strager @devwrite_ Also, no one said it was impossible to use plain Javascript. It's just that developer time is expensive, so you should use things that save time. There's a reason most companies are using a framework. As Adam said: "sure just takes longer with more effort"

@strager @devwrite_ I mean, there's a reason why Meta created React in the first place. At Meta's level, if you use plain JS, you're basically creating your own framework, which seems like Not Invented Here to me?

The irony is, your manually strung together ball of vanilla js spaghetti will probably perform worse than what React gives you out of the box.

@devwrite_ @AdamRackis The difference might not be exactly the same, but it's an apt analogy. The whole point of frameworks like React is that they speed development time but they're opinionated.

@devwrite_ @AdamRackis Sure but it's basically like using assembly instead of a higher-level language. It reminds me of NO$GBA, written in x86 asm. Props to the guy for writing it, but there's a reason most other GBA emulators are not written in assembly.

@AdamRackis People can write vanilla JS without it being spaghetti code

Something I internalized late in my career: Some people can play corporate politics longer than your entire tenure may be at a company. Heck, for some, corporate politics could be their entire career.

@TheJackForge I've noticed I generally expect people to be good at their job (whether they're an administrative assistant or a CS rep), and then get disappointed when they're not.

@stuntman760 @chi_numtot @alanhor @tinylittlesmal1 @threechordme @Choresh2 I also forgot to mention that the subway is cheaper and they're rolling out a program that if you have SNAP you get half off. And the DC Metro has been upping their game with frequent trains. I think it used to be 1 hr 30 minutes from Tysons to Largo due to less frequent trains.
