We should not be arresting our unhoused neighbors. What we're witnessing on our streets is cruel, counterproductive, and unacceptable.
Federal agents should not be patrolling our streets, terrifying our residents, and taking people away. The federal surge needs to end.

Last night, as my partner and I walked home, we witnessed a plainly excessive local & federal police operation to apprehend ONE (1) elderly unhoused woman who, as far as we could tell, was doing nothing more than sitting on a stoop. Not only MPD, but also FBI, USSS, IRS (?!), and of course our favorite mystery personnel in “federal agent” vests. Neighbors were absolutely panicked. The apprehended woman has been a neighbor for decades. The massive response was terrifying and deeply unnecessary. We need better leadership on these issues and we need the correct responses to various situations. Police should be involved where a crime has taken place. The thing about this is that cleaning roadways and disposing of trash and plant waste needs to be done regularly. The National Guard won’t be in D.C. forever, so who will clean up federal lands once they leave? It would be NPS, but it had funding and staffing cut.

It is dangerous for the National Guard to be deployed in residential areas — for people here, for Guard members themselves, and for the communities back home which they are supposed to serve.
Armored tactical vehicles should not be on city streets.

Per D.C. National Guard, one of the vehicles in this accident was an M-ATV, an armored tactical vehicle with a V-shaped hull designed to deflect roadside bombs. They have commonly been used in war zones for years, and weigh about 14 tons each.

As someone who lives in Navy Yard, seeing a war zone outside my home doesn’t make me feel safe. Especially as a young Black man that is subjected to “profiling”.
