T+rrorists Fleeing Northern Military Crackdown Now Moving South — Security Sources Warn
Security and intelligence sources have raised concerns over the movement of t+rrorists from northern Nigeria into parts of the South-East and South-South, following sustained military operations in Zamfara and Sokoto states.
According to multiple security officials, including intelligence operatives and a retired military officer, many insurgents displaced by ongoing offensives are abandoning their strongholds and exploiting vast forest networks and river routes to relocate southward.
The sources disclosed that the fleeing f+ghters are moving through Niger and Kogi states before entering Anambra, with some continuing into Abia and Imo states. Others are reportedly heading further south and west.
“These t+rrorists started moving from Zamfara through forests and remote routes and may have ended up in states such as Imo and Abia. Some are even believed to be in Ogun State,” a senior security source said.
The officials explained that the insurgents rely on interconnected forests, cattle paths and riverine corridors that stretch across several states, enabling them to evade security checkpoints and aerial surveillance.
A retired Army General described Kogi State as a critical transit and coordination hub for the groups, citing its strategic location and access to multiple forest routes leading into southern Nigeria.
“Kogi serves as a major intersection point. From there, they can connect to routes leading to the South-East, South-West and South-South through forests and river channels,” he said.
An operative of the Department of State Services also alleged that some t+rror groups maintain operational bases within forested areas linking Kogi to parts of Ekiti, Ondo and Edo states, providing access deeper into southern regions.
Security experts identified dense forest belts between Anambra and Imo states, including the Owerre-Ezukala, Ogbunike, Awka and Orlu corridors, as potential movement routes due to their difficult terrain and limited accessibility.
