What should you pay writers? $1/word to start. (Or the equivalent in a flat rate). Nothing less than $1000 for 1000-words. No hourly rates. No endless revisions. What should a writer at this rate do for you? Expertise. A writer at this rate will know exactly how to write a piece that speaks to YOUR audience and performs. If you have questions on how to make that happen, ask your writer. Interview-skills. Good writers know how to converse with SMEs to get a high-level grasp on the topic. Optimized content. Your writer is using paid tools and strategy to make sure your content gets noticed. These tools are expensive. They’re built into the prices. Publish-ready content. When you get a piece it will be publish-ready. This doesn’t mean you won’t have revision requests. But you’re not going to spend hours tweaking. Most writers have a 3rd party editor (also built into prices) they work with so they don’t accidentally send you garbage. Process consulting. If you’ve never worked with a freelancer before, no prob. Your writer will take the lead and give you everything you need to be successful. Good writing. People are going to keep reading your content bc it has interesting hooks, style, supporting research, a good cadence, examples that slap, structure that keeps eyeballs moving forward. You’re not gonna see a boring lump of text. ——— Most of the writers I work side-by-side with charge these rates. They also provide unmatched value. These writers create pieces that bring your business hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Freelance opportunity 🚨 I have a pal looking to hire a fintech writer. Bonus points if you've written content that deals with equity or IPOs specifically. If that's you, drop your elevator pitch here so I can share it. No DMs, please :)

PSA: I understand it can be hard to hire good writers with a small budget... But I sometimes see writers asking if a $15/1,000 words is a decent rate for a beginner. The answer isn't just *no*, it's also: that's below minimum wage. Too many companies don't show basic respect.

A question for my fellow freelance writers: What are some ways you enforce boundaries with clients? E.g. not being available past 4pm/on weekends, insisting on a deposit payment for first project, asking for detailed briefs, etc. (I'd love to feature some in an article! 🙏)

Protect. Your. Time. ⏰ I’m all for helping a client navigate their project and outline a potential partnership. But I’ve given out far too many “free hours” to clients who aren’t prepared to move ahead or were digging for a discount.

Want more clients? Look at your freelance website, portfolio, or email pitch, ask yourself... ⚡ Would *you* hire *you* based on what you see? ⚡ Is what you see enough to build enough trust for someone to invest their time, money, and energy reaching out and hiring you?
