@Reiteller @SimonStormRider Uranium decays into helium through alpha decay, where uranium-238 or 235 emits alpha particles—each a helium-4 nucleus. Earths a big place and atomic decay happens all the time, because half life is the time for half the stuff to decay not a specific lifetime for one bit.

There is a seriousness of helium waste most people don't seem to comprehend. We can't make helium, there's no chemistry we can do - it's incredibly rare on Earth.
Eric Feigl-Ding@DrEricDing

FUN FACT—helium cools the superconducting magnets in more than 14,000 MRI machines used in hospitals worldwide. We lost the largest helium extraction plant in the world in Qatar. US reserves running low. Helium cannot be produced de novo. Any helium escape is permanent.

@SandyofCthulhu Progress Party. Anti tax party, famous for running tax avoidance in their ads, that was then destroyed by the establishment over tax when their leader was convicted of tax evasion. That said they did have to knock 10% off of income tax in the face of the enemy, so yay.

In the 1970s (I think) a Danish politician said, in effect, “Denmark hasn’t won a war in 400 years. I move we disband our armed forces and get an answering machine for would-be invaders to leave messages.” I don’t remember his name but he’s one of my favorite politicians ever.
ChrisO_wiki@ChrisO_wiki

1/ Denmark was reportedly preparing for full-scale war with the US over Greenland in January, with military support from France, Germany, and Nordic nations. Elite troops and F-35 jets with live ammunition were sent, and runways were to be blown up to prevent an invasion. ⬇️

Supergirl director Craig Gillespie on what to expect from the character: "What I loved about the script that Ana [Nogueira] wrote and what you guys were supporting is she's got a lot of baggage and a lot of demons coming into this, which is very different than the way Superman is in his life." Is this what you want out of Supergirl?

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy showrunner Noga Landau on the main villain for Season 2: "The villain of season 2 is not just a person. In a very classic Trek sense, it is more an impossible dilemma that we find ourselves in as Starfleet." What do you think it is?

@anon_opin I buy books for the pleasure of reading them at home. The supermarket is efficient. The bookshop is full of Monster Milking Farm, so as a male its not for me.

I'm baffled by people who go to a bricks-and-mortar supermarket every week, but buy things like books online. Why would you not want to spend time in a nice little bookshop, but you're happy to go to an aircraft hanger on the arse-end of town full of baked beans?

@neilvagg Because its bad writing. Its not a reveal. To use the meme, if its a show called Vampire Surfing Dude, the wait for hours for the guy to become a vampire and then to get out to learn surfing is filler. If he ain't surfing in the first 15m you have failed.

The literature of German invasion fiction generally has to yadda-yadda the means by which Germany (or Nordland) gets past the RN and conducts a successful amphibious assault without landing craft. That said, never underrate the alien space bats.

@Nusbacher I mean, aside from needing to explain which particular Alien Space bats intervened to make Sealion work!

Unconfirmed reports: Iranian 🇮🇷 regime hardliner Saeed Jalili will succeed Ali Larijani Jalili previously served as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council from 2007-2013; during that time, he also served as Iran's chief nuclear negotiator. He is currently a member of Iran's Expediency Discernment Council.

If this happens, my age group will have been robbed of 15 years of pension rights. That's about £185,000 in state pension, but it also applies to your private and work pensions, which go back in line with the state ones. It's the biggest theft from poorest to richest ever.
Alison Moyet@AlisonMoyet

I see the proposal that retirent age should be raised to 75. My question is - Where are these jobs going to come from? Given that the young and mid-lifers alike are struggling to find work.

Israel’s defence min is claiming that they killed Ali Larijani. He would be a big loss to Iran, was de facto leader since Ayatollah Khamenei’s death. He was also v well known to western diplomats working the nuclear file + someone who would be impt in deciding how this war ends

Sigh. You're being reduced to insults. The answer is, broadly, that countries that export oil will do better than countries that import oil in a time of higher oil prices. This is an unremarkable observation. The US policy has been about reducing cheap imports from Asia which high oil prices will do so. Again, unremarkable. Trump isn't up for election again. The Democrats have already tried to kill him twice. Again, unremarkable observation.

@FreeportThinker @DachshundColin You're so far up Trump's tract you can't think straight You think that the US is domestically ok because a few oil companies are coining it in & despite one of their biggest markets being in recession? Trump cares about what people think of him, and Vance & Miller really care
