@CinemaTweets1 As a huge Tron fan, this is upsetting to read. I still plan to see the film on the big screen though. One thing that I didn't see you touch on is the soundtrack. How did NIN do and did it seem to fit with the film as a whole?

Tron: Ares (🌟🌟) is not a good film. I take no pleasure in making this statement. I love the first two Tron films & I’d take a bullet for Jeff Bridges. But I spent 2 hours, $20, and basically all of my free time on Wednesday night seeing this movie. I wish I hadn’t. I want to be clear- Ares does have redeemable qualities, I’m not going to overreact here. The visual are magnificent and the sound from my boys Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross is exceptional. But those redeemable qualities don’t outweigh the fact that there are no real stakes here and the story is weak- very weak. Ultimately, a bad story, an even worse screenplay, and an atrocious performance from Jared Leto instantly evaporate whatever technical heights Ares reaches. Part of the reason I gave Superman a two-star review is because I felt the visuals in that film were awful. It looked like a Disney Channel original film. Even though I liked the story & loved the performances in Superman, I wrote that cinema, at day’s end, is a visual medium. And without a baseline quality of visuals on the screen, I cannot give a film more than two stars. Well, Ares is the inverse of the exact same issue I experienced with Superman: the same way I need a “baseline quality” of visuals in a movie, there needs to be a floor or a limit to how shitty a story can be even if its visuals rock. I still stand by my belief that cinema is a visual art form- I’m not retracting that. But I say all that to say this: the best visuals in the world cannot overcome a a poorly written story. Ares is a poorly written story. I had no interest whatsoever in the outcome or fate of Julian (Evan Peters) or Eve (Greta Lee). We meet Julian & Eve 15 years after Tron: Legacy. The idea here being that Eve runs one corporation, ENCOM, while Julian runs the other, Dillinger Systems. The two are locked in what appears to be an eternal rivalry over who can essentially bring “digital soldiers” to life through a weird ass laser beam. One of those digital soldiers? Ares (Jared Leto), who is introduced as the perfect soldier that is totally expendable. I’m absolutely not the first person to draw this comparison, but Leto’s Ares is essentially a modern day, tech version of Frankenstein’s monster. Or at least that’s how I interpreted it. The story here ultimately follows Eve & Julian’s battle to control these digital soldiers and unlock the 29 minute limitation these digital soldiers have once they’re brought to life. There are way too many subplots going on in this story and most of them are cliche, hollow, and not fully developed. I think there was a chance for Ares to get the story right if it just focused on the corporate battle or if just focused on Ares trying to learn what it means to be human. But instead, this film is overstuffed to the gills. There’s family drama, trade secrets, AI talk, fight sequences, and corporate espionage. Some people may enjoy all these shallow, barely touched-on subplots. I am not one of those people. I very much enjoyed the light-cycle chase with Ares and Eve about halfway through the film and I also enjoyed the way this movie utilized sound. But the story is so muddled and clunky, I never ultimately cared about what I was seeing on the screen. Lastly, there’s the performances. Mainly, Jared Leto. I’m going to take Leto to task here. I have to. I would be failing those who follow me if I didn’t. Leto is atrocious in this movie. I think there’s definitely a version of this film where a more electric, charismatic, hell…AWAKE actor plays Ares and elevates this film closer to its full potential. But Jared Leto is incapable of making a character this one dimensional interesting. His performance bored the hell out of me. Watching him sort of learn what it means to be human and his growing distrust for Julian was just boring as shit. Between this and Morbius, I don’t really understand the direction Leto’s career is headed. More importantly, I don’t really care anymore. Leto’s character is poorly written and his performance is even worse, all of which heavily weighs this film down. I wanted to like Tron: Ares. I just can’t.

@kaylanijuanita @jenjajeh You’re an idiot and should probably delete your account. @SarahKSilverman is Jewish. She’s going to side with Israel. As the rest of the world should, considering Hamas is a terrorist organization pulling terrorist acts against Israel. But yah—blame Sarah.
